ATF special agents, Thayne Wolfe, and his partner, Jarrett Evans, have gotten into sticky situations in the past but nothing prepares them for the daunting task of being loaned out to a coal mine in West Virginia where Jarrett’s grown up. Investigating a deadly mining explosion may be the end of them yet.
In one of the most beautiful places on earth, Jarrett is familiar with the territory, growing up working in a nearby mine for a couple years before joining the Marine Corps just after high school. When he and his partner encounter a dubious mine CEO, two ATF agents who they’re tasked to investigate, and a good ‘ol boy who has a pickaxe to grind, all they can hope, is to solve this case before ending up dead and buried in that mine.
From the beaches of California, to the coal-rich mountains of Appalachia, Jarrett’s dubious past seems to rear its ugly head wherever they go. Join our heroes as they are forced to face danger, fear, and maybe the most frightening thing they’ve ever faced together… family.
REVIEW:
I am a huge fan of this series and I think this was my most favorite book yet.
Thayne and Jarrett are in the thick of it again! If it’s a tough and risky case those boys seem to always draw the short straw. This time they are loaned out to the field office near the Appalachian mountain coal mines of West Virginia, where Jarrett grew up and worked the mines for a couple years when he was younger. His expertise is drawn upon when the SAC for the area asks the bureau for help. He is concerned that his own two field agents might be corrupt or just too close to the situation. They have had tough and dangerous cases before but this might just be the most treacherous because it drops Jarrett literally in his estranged family’s backyard.
Jarrett’s family life has been hinted at before. We knew that coming out to his father, Mark Evans, the Associate Director of Military Affairs for the CIA, wasn’t a good situation. His father and brother were both homophobic and didn’t take the news well. He has been estranged from them for quite awhile. But Thayne knew that this was wearing on his partner and lover. Especially his absence from his younger two brothers. How the author brought this once close-knit family back together was touching and, at times, tearful. When Thayne lays everything out on the line to Mark, and Jarrett’s daddy finally realizes the damage and hurt he has done, was one of my favorite scenes. The turn around of this man was endearing and poignant. All the mistrust and misunderstandings being brought to light and dealt with in a mature and acceptable way was wonderful to witness. Families will always have strife and drama but seeing open wounds dealt with, being cared for and the healing begin is always rewarding.
Jarrett’s entire family worked its way into my heart. From his two younger brothers, Jase and Steel, and his Aunt Edie, who had always accepted him, to his dad and finally his brother Elijah, who were a worry, I hope we get to see more of this amazing and resilient family. And when things hit way too close to home you had better watch out because the Evans boys are a force to reckon with when banded together.
As I stated, this is my most favorite book in the series so far. Although it did have a good share of danger and intrigue, I believe what made it even more special and endearing was that it was more open and detailing into who these men are. It began to focus more on what they wanted and needed and the self-imposed barriers that they are starting to break through. I can’t wait for the next book in the series as Jarrett and Thayne explore their love and continue to grow in their relationship. This book was so riveting that I literally couldn’t put it down and read it straight through the afternoon and late into the night. Yes, it’s that good!
