We all have tragic backstories in today’s world.
I wake up chained to the wall of a dark cell aware of two things: I failed my sister, and I smell my enemy.
When I’m taken to meet Dare, the alpha of the Silver Tip pack, I’m sure I’m about to lose my throat. The last thing I expect is for the Alpha to recognize me as his fated mate. No way is he going to let me go now, and I still have to find a way to rescue my sister.
As I plot my escape to save her, I find that if I leave, Dare could be killed by power-hungry members of his pack. And now he’s more to me than my fated mate—my heart is involved. With time ticking by on my sister’s life, I have to make a choice I never thought I’d face—my sister’s life or my mate’s? That’s if I can survive the undead shifters intent on killing me first…
REVIEW:
What a great start to the series! This story takes place in a dystopian setting where the humans have all died out and what is left consists of werewolves (human/wolf), Weres (human/wolf/were) and Nowheres (undead Weres or werewolves). The Weres and the various werewolf packs exist in somewhat secure colonies, whereas the Nowheres exist beyond those boundaries. None of these groups get along (mainly the Weres and werewolves, since the Nowheres just eat anyone they can find), but the Weres and the werewolves have a perceived peace treaty.
As for the characters, aside what can be learned from the blurb, Reese and his brother are taken to the Were pack when Reese’s brother seeks their help after being left for dead by their werewolf pack. Unfortunately, they did not escape without their sister, who is still in the hands of the evil pack leader. So, Reese and his brother are still focused on rescuing her in time.
But, when they are brought before the Were leader, Dare, it is obvious that Reese and Dare are True Mates, a rare occurrence in any species, let alone cross species, such as with these two. Unable to resist the pull of the True Mate bond, Reese struggles with thoughts of his sister, whether he can trust Dare to help them, or whether he must plan his own escape to carry it out himself. As time goes on, he and Dare become quite close, and it is clear that Dare has too much to lose by helping Reese, and so he takes the matter into his own hands.
I was drawn into this interesting world right from the start. While it has some of the usual cliches, such as the instalove mate bond, it is edgy and sexy and a bit darker which gave it a very different feel. No cutesy fluffy werewolf instalove here! The sex is hot and heavy and has much more of a mating feel to it at times, especially when Dare is unable to control his various sides. He is big, bad and a bit scary, but he’s also extremely caring and loving and makes a great alpha for his pack. Reese is a great match for him as well, and while he is fine playing the submissive in the sack, he doesn’t let Dare walk all over him outside of it.
There are some great side characters here as well. Reese’s brother, Jude, and his protector, G, clearly have a growing connection as well, and they also seem perfect for each other but in much different ways than Dare and Reese. Then, there’s Dare’s brother, Bay, who is funny and charming and definitely needs someone to love. Luckily, his story is up next, and I can’t wait to see the story continue!
This was a very well-written, fast-paced story with lots of love, action and some adventure. it is about starting over and realizing home is where your heart is. If you are a fan of Ms. Erickson, you will definitely want to pick this book up. She has a wonderful style of storytelling that I find very refreshing. I highly recommend you give her books a try.
