For non-Brits, Remember remember, the fifth of November is a folk verse referencing Guy Fawkes, who tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament on 5th November 1605. You can read more over here.
The Fifth of November
Remember, remember!
The fifth of November,
The Gunpowder treason and plot;
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot!
Guy Fawkes and his companions
Did the scheme contrive,
To blow the King and Parliament
All up alive.
Threescore barrels, laid below,
To prove old England’s overthrow.
But, by God’s providence, him they catch,
With a dark lantern, lighting a match!
A stick and a stake
For King James’s sake!
If you won’t give me one,
I’ll take two,
The better for me,
And the worse for you.
A rope, a rope, to hang the Pope,
A penn’orth of cheese to choke him,
A pint of beer to wash it down,
And a jolly good fire to burn him.
Holloa, boys! holloa, boys! make the bells ring!
Holloa, boys! holloa boys! God save the King!
Hip, hip, hooor-r-r-ray!
In the UK Guy Fawkes’ grisly end is celebrated every year with a Guy perched atop a bonfire and lots of fireworks. I spend my time comforting my dog who freaks out at loud noises.
Why have I mentioned this? Because today is election day in America and I can’t speak for anyone else, but I have a news station on in the background, following the election day. I think the results for this election could have just as explosive results in the months to follow, both in America and globally. This is not a political rant. I’m not American, and it’s not my business to tell you who to vote for. But this year, more than ever, I’ve learned the importance of voting. If you can vote, please do it and get that sticker.
Also, on a personal note, it’s 31 years since my mother died. She is much loved in my heart, and I miss her always.
