Love Bytes is saying welcome and hello to author Kris Zipper joining us today to talk about zir new release “The Queer and the Restless”, a new release in the Queers of La Vista series.
Welcome Kris 🙂
5 Things About The Queer and the Restless
- Queers of La Vista is a five book series. The first two can largely be read on their own, but woe betide the person who reads books three, four, and five out of order! SPOILER CITY! The murders happen in a sequence, get resolved, and the community deals with the fallout. Bam! After The Queer and the Restless, stay tuned for One Life to Lose (December 12), and As La Vista Turns (February 22).
- Ed works at his dream job. He’s a journalist at his local paper! Just like he always wanted! Except…it turns out it’s not the greatest job. He’s a staff writer. You know: the folks who write everything that none of the veteran journalists want to write. Ed wants a career in journalism, and he’s willing to work his way up. But man, man, he’s gotta write some boring stuff to get there.
- Have you ever gone camping in the rain? Have you ever hike-in camped in the rain? I HAVE. I don’t often include a lot of torn-directly-from-life moments in books, but each probably has at least one moment like this. When faced with an adventure on very little notice that one of our MCs would be delighted by, while the other (arguably more practical) MC would find super questionable, hike-in camping in the rain seemed like the perfect diversion!
- I come up with a lot of names. So. Many. Names. And some folks love naming stuff (*cough* Roan Parrish, JR Gray *cough*), but not me. I’m not a fan of naming either characters or places. Sometimes, when things get tough, I turn to my Facebook Group, Ripper’s Irregulars. One day while writing The Queer and the Restless, I hit up my group for hipster names, and a good friend of mine from way back suggested I name a hipster for another friend of ours, who will never, ever read this book.
And so I did. And no, I’m totally not telling you which of Ed’s hipster roommates he is…
- Speaking of Ed’s roommates, let’s talk about sex. No. Not with the roommates. Ed’s roommates are goofy and arguably two dimensional, but they were stupidly fun to write. Even more fun to write was the sex Ed and Alisha have at Ed’s place, dodging the roommates. I’m not a funny writer. I’m definitely not a comedian. I think writing funny is amazing, and I admire the hell out of people who do it well.
There are a couple of moments in The Queer and the Restless when I laugh out loud. In particular, there’s this sex scene…I swear, it makes me cackle. And I wrote it! But it surprises and delights me every damn time. You’ll have to let me know what you think!
About The Queer and the Restless
Ed Masiello has been on testosterone for a year, is working his dream job as a reporter, and is finally passing as a man (so long as you don’t ask his abuela). But the investigation of a murder case is starting to take over his life. Afraid he’s becoming obsessed, he goes to the local club to relax, and meets the flighty, whimsical Alisha.
Alisha is a free spirit who’s tossed aside ambition for travel and adventure. Her approach to life is a far cry from Ed’s, and while Ed has always assumed that meeting his goals would make him happy, Alisha is much more content than him—despite all the plans she can’t yet fulfill.
As their relationship heats up, so does the murder case. Alisha thinks Ed needs a break, but someone’s got to find this killer, and he wants to be there when it all goes down. Besides, taking off into the great unknown with Alisha is crazy. But opting for what’s safe is just another way of living in fear, and Ed vowed to stop living like that a long time ago.

Poor Ed. It sucks to be in your dream job only to find out it’s a nightmare. And yes, I have camped in the rain many times. But not hike-in camped. We’re more civilized than that. We go in a camper now! 😀 Still when there’s 5 people crammed in less than 40 ft . . .
Thanks for the post!
