Today we have author C.M. Torrens stopping by Love Bytes to talk about new release “The Alpha’s Weave” , book 1 in the new Pack Born series.
A Peek Through the Veil
The things that live in the darkness have always fascinated me. The myths and legends, the urban stories of ghosts and boogiemen that crop up in anyone’s backyard, they are just a veil away from the world we live in. They spawn from fears of the unknown and darkness. The creak in the house in the middle of the night which can easily be dismissed as the house settling, can morph into ghosts when alone in the dark.
I’m a rational person by default. There are no ghosts in my house, no demons living in the vacant “murder house” across town and no mythical creatures that will save me from harm. But I’ve often wondered what if they were real. What if there were demons haunting houses, and Death could be bargained with and people could change shape or live forever? And what if I am wrong? What if there are things like monsters we create in our heads? What would they be like?
So many wonderful questions for a writer, its little wonder we tend to have many more ideas that we could write in two lifetimes. There is always something on the back burner waiting to be written, which we may or may not ever get to.
These Pack Born books were one such set of stories. Ones that I thought would never see the light of day, not because they aren’t good, but because, there’s only so much time in a day and when you have a family and life that likes to interrupt, there never seems to be enough time to write all the things you want to write.
Dante is a favorite character of mine. My poor little shape shifter. He grows so much in such a short period of time, because he must. His world is changing around him and if he doesn’t grow, he’ll drown. But he’s a survivor and a fighter. He’ll get there by tooth and by claw. Watching him grow has been a special pleasure.
The Alpha’s Weave is the beginning of Dante’s story as the world as he knows it begins to break down. There are things out there that not even he knows about, but the sooner he learns the better. There are things that go bump in the night even among his people and they are far more dangerous than the local ghost in our world.
I hope you enjoy his journey through a world that’s not quiet ours and let’s take a peek through the veil.

After years of abuse in his old shifter pack, Dante found a new life with Alpha Victor. He would do anything for Victor. Anything but stay away from Jesse, the half-blood stray. But when Victor names Dante his heir, he has no choice but to accept the duties given to him even if it means relinquishing the possibility of love. He owes his life and sanity to Victor, and that’s a debt Dante can never fully repay.
But Dante should have known the good life couldn’t last. His former alpha, Caster, is not a male who lets anything of value slip through his grasp. When rumors fly of Caster’s return, Dante knows the man will stop at nothing to possess him and his talent once again. When Jesse is kidnapped and Victor falls victim to an untimely death, his worst fears are realized. His old alpha has finally returned to reclaim him. Dante must use his fears and nightmares to save Jesse and his pack, even if it means sacrificing himself.

C.M. Torrens has traveled a great portion of the United States. She was born in the East, raised in the West and bounced around until she found her way to the Mid-west (much to her confusion). She currently lives in a small city in Indiana not far from Chicago.
She tries to use some of the memories of the moves and travels in her youth to help create worlds for her characters to live in. The grand mountains, the heat of the deserts, crowded cities and humid bayous each hold a memory of a time when she was once again a new creature stepping into a world already inhabited by others. Sometimes it was a time when she could reinvent herself and others it was just another short stop in a place she knew she would never stay. She was among the outsiders, never quite having enough time to fit in before moving away once again.
Now she does her traveling on paper and creates her own worlds and characters to populate the vast space in her mind. Many of her characters are like her in a way. Outsiders. On the outside looking in on the world she’s created. Sometimes they need to change and grow, but in her worlds they make their marks on the land and carve themselves a proper place to live and love. And through their stories she’s carving out a piece of land for herself as well, one word at a time.
