Never Say The “Easy” Word – Sue Brown
In which Sue learns never to use the ‘e’ word. EVER!
The first incarnation of Morning My Angel was substantially different from the final product. For a start, it was written first person, present tense, which I know isn’t popular with readers. I initially subbed the part story to a publisher and asked if they thought I should change it to third person, past tense. They agreed it would be a good idea. I thought it would be easy.
How stupid am I?
*headdesk*
It’s not as simple as changing each sentence. The whole structure of your story changes. Your characters change. You’re not inside their head anymore and taking away their thoughts is so hard. Effectively I decided to write a whole new story, halfway through. I have edited and re-edited ad nauseum, trying to take out the original structure. I think, I hope, I have a much stronger story for it, but oh boy, it has been hard.
However, I have a suggestion. If you ever decide to change the tense, if you have ever the slightest niggle that you want to change it, do so on the first page, not thirty thousand words in. I’ve edited MMA ten times and yesterday, I still found a word in first person.
I like first person, present tense and it’s my natural way to write. Now I’m going to decide up front what tense the story is being written in. Up front, Sue. Remember this.

Josh Cooper, top US security field agent, is sent on an inter-agency assignment to London, when a partner in his firm goes missing in suspicious circumstances. Used to working in sole charge of his well-honed team, he clashes heads with the handsome, but pompous Cal, his UK co-operator and superior. Josh’s gut tells him something is wrong. He’s being kept out of the loop and Cal’s agenda is running on a different path.
He also has a personal issue to deal with. He’s involved in a cyber-relationship with “Charlie”, an unknown man who connected with Josh by accident. Their banter has led to deeper respect and a sexual interest, but now Josh is faced with a growing attraction to Cal. Between this conflict and the tension of the mission, Josh’s heart and head are overworked and confused. Things can’t get much worse.
Then Josh discovers the enemies he’s seeking have a new target: him.
