Mac had to be out of his mind.
Completely out of his ever-loving mind to even consider rooming with Gideon. The same guy he kissed during his freshman year who said he was straight. He’s held Mac’s mind hostage for the last two years after running out that one special night. Mac was a fan of social experiments, and this one was going to be a doozy.
Gideon doesn’t sweat anything. He was always two lies ahead of everyone. A master at spinning rock solid alibis to protect the house of cards that was his life. To Browerton University, he’s the popular guy getting over a breakup. To his family…the dutiful and responsible son. But rooming with Mac was bringing up old memories and forming new ones. First, a friendship develops, and then a late night infused with alcohol pushes them into uncharted, benefits-laden waters.
As their sexual experimentation continues, and the lies add up, both of them fight to withstand the feelings growing between them, feelings that could ruin their friendship and topple Gideon’s house of cards for good.
REVIEW:
After reading the blurb, I was pretty interested to check this book out. So glad I did, too. Holy buckets, AJ Truman! You knock my socks off. This book is witty, well done, and extremely hard to put down.
Mac came to college not only to continue academic education, but also to pursue his sexuality. At a party in his freshman year, Mac thought he found someone who shared his <cough cough> interests, so he made a move and kissed the man. Who ended up claiming he was straight. Ugh.
*cut to two years later*
Gideon’s girlfriend broke up with him the day they were supposed to move in together, so he has to find a roommate fast. After his friends spread the word, he finds out that the roommate of a friend of a friend is in need of a place. Sounds like things are looking up for him, right? Well, that person looking for a place turns out to be the guy who kissed Gideon 2 years ago at a freshman party. At this point, Gideon figured the old adage “beggars can’t be choosers” was a pretty apt description of his situation. So, against his better judgement, Gideon agreed to a trial period with Mac, in order to see if they could make good roommates.
Where Gideon is neat and orderly, Mac is… Well, Mac is definitely not the tidiest person in the world. But, somehow, the two men end up working out most of their differences and agree to be official roommates.
Then, something happens. After hitting a gay club with Mac and some of his friends, Gideon is curious. And, Mac is definitely willing to let Gideon explore his curiosity on him. After this little experiment, Gideon gets curiouser and curiouser, and things start getting a bit complicated.
I love Mac and Gideon. Their relationship is so easy but complicated, scary but thrilling, and just plain sweet. The way they interact, even from the beginning is fantastic, and feels very real.
AJ, you are brilliant. This story is fantastic! Honestly, I could not put this book down. The great thing is that if you have not yet read any of the other books in this series, it’s okay. Out of My Mind can easily be read as a standalone (tho you really should buy the preceding books and read them anyway because they’re awesome). If you have not read any of this author’s works, I highly recommend you do so. In my opinion, you will not regret the decision to buy all of their books.
