Abandoned. Abused. Betrayed.
Ex-cop Maverick “Mav” James needs only three things. His Harley, an open road and his work in an underground organization that delivers justice when the law can’t.
Family? They left him long before he left them.
Friends? A liability.
A place to call home? Doesn’t exist.
Mav’s motto is simple: Get done and get out. Work, sex, doesn’t matter. No emotional connections. Simple.
Until he meets him.
Alone. Hiding. Broken.
At fifteen years old, Eli Galvez had nothing. No family, no friends and only his body as a means to make enough money to survive. But a chance meeting changed all that and eight years later, he’s well on his way to having the life he could once only dream of. He’s been accepted into medical school and he’s finally returned home to Seattle to be closer to the men and women who don’t share his blood, but are the only family he’s ever really known.
Only things aren’t what they seem and the secrets Eli has been hiding are about to come to the surface with dangerous consequences.
One final chance at a real future.
Guys like Eli just aren’t Mav’s type, period. Yet he can’t deny his intense attraction to the younger man who only looks at him with fear in his eyes. Until the day there’s something else in those eyes too. Something that draws Mav in and refuses to let go. Something that makes him want to forget his rules. But Mav’s learned the hard way what happens when you get too close to something. And while he vows to protect Eli after a violent attack leaves the younger man shaken, protection is all he’ll offer.
Because anything else would just cost too much.
REVIEW:
I’ve come to crave Sloane Kennedy’s books like I crave water to drink and air to breathe. Her writing calls to me and gives me all the angst, passion, love, drama, and desire I need in my stories. Book 4 was a little more intense than the others. I feel all the books have contained the damaged, scarred characters but this went a little further than the others and maybe that was because the age of the victims or the circumstances. It was without a doubt very painful to read but like all the books it just makes the story all the more intense. Be warned, however, there were a lot of characters in this book. Almost too many to keep track of but I understood the need of it.
Eli is emotionally scarred to the point where it’s kept him from his “family” and his dreams. He wants nothing to do with the man that evokes feelings in him that at times he finds shameful. He’s also surprised that the man makes him feel safe and that truly shocks him.
Although Mav had a rough start at life he chose a career where he could protect and serve. Unfortunately, that also hurt him in the long run and he set out protecting and serving a different way. While working a job at a hospital he keeps running into a young man that completely captivates him.
While Mav tries to run from his feelings, Eli holds on tight reluctant to let Mav escape. There’s serious danger lurking in Eli’s life and Mav vows to protect him at all cost.
I really truly loved Eli and Mav in this story. They complimented each other so incredibly well and I adored how Eli refused to give up on them.
Overall, this was another FANTASTIC addition to the series. Absolutely recommend.
