A warm welcome to author Delphine Dryden joining us to talk about her new release “Top To Bottom”.
Welcome Delphine 🙂
Kink on the Sly
Fun fact about kinky people, for those who like to read bdsm romance but aren’t actively kinky themselves: kink isn’t always done in the context of a “scene,” and people who are kinky in the real world don’t magically turn vanilla outside the dungeon or bedroom. They are still kinky even when they aren’t having anything like sex!
In a lot of kinky erotic romances, I never see this dynamic. If the main characters are exhibiting kinkiness outside of a sex scene, it’s because they’re essentially taking their scene dynamic into a public place. A Dom ordering dinner for a sub, risky semi-public fondling or exposure, somebody wearing a karada or cock cage under their street clothes.
In my experience, while all that probably does take place, what happens a lot more often is something like…your partner pulling the plastic sword out of their cocktail lime and getting a gleam in their eyes, then sneakily scratching or poking you with it throughout the evening. A moment of intense eye contact or a quiet high-five at the hardware store every time the two of you pass the spools of rope and chain. A surreptitious whack on the butt or thigh with any handy stick that can serve as a switch. Bending over to unload the dishwasher in a way you know will bring other activities to your favorite observer’s mind.
These aren’t scenes. They aren’t negotiated, planned moments, where the partners first establish specific hard limits or safe words; they’re just what kinky people do because it comes naturally. It is as innocuous and common as vanilla partners playing footsie. I try to include this sort of interaction in my books whenever possible, because it’s what I see in the real world, but also because it’s fun.
In TOP TO BOTTOM, Amie and Dru start out trying to keep their kink inside the club—they want to keep things from getting too personal. Needless to say, they don’t succeed…because kinky people are still kinky when they leave the club, and people who are attracted to each other don’t magically become un-attracted when they leave the bedroom. It’s kinky footsie from start to finish until both women have to acknowledge their connection has never ended.
About Top to Bottom
Drusilla Stasevich wants to leave the past behind and start the next chapter of her life. Returning to her hometown to open her dream kink club, Escape, seems like the perfect solution. But it can be tricky making dreams come true—especially when the person you want to share them with isn’t around anymore.
Amie Templeton is no stranger to tough times. She’s learned to make it on her own, and doesn’t do relationships outside the kink world. When her ex Dru moves back to town, old feelings surface. But that’s fine, right, since Dru has just opened the hottest new kink club in town?
Dru and Amie want to get the distracting spark between them out of their systems. Instead, their intense play sessions fan that spark into a flame. As if Dru didn’t have enough on her plate, an anonymous saboteur threatens to push her new club out of business. It will take the help of everybody at Escape to set things right again, and a lot of trust for Dru and Amie to start working toward a new life together.
