BLURB: Campbell Fain has been rebelling against his father, refusing to grow up for so long, he’s not sure what his life really means anymore. When he meets the man that makes his heart melt, he lies to impress him. Unfortunately, facing the truth may turn out to be the least of his problems when he’s forced to come face to face with the sins of his father.
He was the quarterback in high school, all American sweetheart and solid guy, but Stone Medlock is just figuring out his life. When he meets Campbell Fain, it turns his world around and he just might be falling hard for the rebellious punk, but will he still be able to support and trust Campbell when the lies come out?
Will Campbell’s lies tear them apart before they even begin? Will they find the love behind the lies?
I started reading MM Romance before I started writing it. That in itself was an eye opener for me. I used to read a ton of fantasy and sci-fi and then paranormal romance, because I like the paranormal element. I thought I’d never, never read contemporary romance. Then I read the Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward.
That was it.
Her gay characters were amazing and their love woven into the larger story. I loved it and leapt (very quickly) into the MM Romance genre and I read EVERYTHING – including regular, contemporary love stories.
Needless to say (but I will anyway) I had to try my hand at writing them. I left my fantasy and sci-fi for more urban and contemporary flare. Not permanently. But, the few big stories have been contemporary and inspired by those stories that have multiple plots going on – other stuff besides the romance. I’m talking about stories like the ones by A.E. Via, Morticia Knight, Jaime Reese and so many others.
They put their characters in danger with the other stuff going on at the same time as the romance. I love it when all this stuff is happening and they STILL find love – and have some pretty damn hot sex as well!
I aspire to write those kinds of exciting stories – I tend to think of them as adventure/romance. So, this next book, Evasive Maneuvers, has a romance going on and that is the main thrust of the book, but in the background, other things happen and put our main protagonist in danger. It’s fun to see how they handle the strife along with the budding romance.
Campbell Fain has been one of those characters that jumped into my head and WOULD NOT leave me alone. He demanded his story be written in dramatic flare. He has been amazing and the true driving force of the story. You know you’re a writer when you have a character like Camp hijack your brain for three solid months.
Campbell doesn’t take himself too seriously. He has a huge attitude and he lets everyone know it. He made decisions in his life based on doing the opposite of what he thought his father wanted him to do. He ignored the fact that his friends were doing serious things (like growing up) and he wasn’t. Until he met Stone Medlock. The man changed his life.
The first scene of the book is that pivotal moment. It’s a classic romance trope, but Campbell swears this is how it had to happen. He looked across a crowded room and saw that perfect man. Love at first sight, hearts in the eyes….
NOPE – Campbell interrupts and says Stone was sexy as hell and he just KNEW the man would rock his world —–whatever… It really got him going.
Here’s that first moment:
The strobe lights flashed and pulsed with the music as I stepped out into the throng of hot bodies jumping and grinding with the beat. The whole floor moved like one massive monster, gyrating and turning to the tune, like rats following the piper to their doom. I joined them anyway, my body moving of its own accord, and glanced over the others on the floor. That’s when I saw him across the room.
He swayed a little out of tune with the music as if he heard some different, dissonant beat in his head. I’d never seen anything like him. He had a tough attitude, uncaring and so far from the self-absorbed club rats I normally ended up with, and so unlike me. He wore his dark hair cut short around the sides with tight curls across the top—not even highlighted, but left a natural oaky brown. His eyes pierced me from across the dance floor, though I couldn’t tell the color from this distance and the house lights that played across him. He wore tight jeans and an unzipped hoodie that exposed his bare chest. Just a smattering of dark hair spilled across his pecks and a small line flowed down his ripped abdomen in a treasure trail that disappeared into the waistband of his jeans. My ass clenched tight, imagining him inside me, thrusting his hard cock, slowly in and out.

Stone pulled his jeans all the way off, dropping them to the floor along with his sexy briefs. I couldn’t help notice how manly they were; everything about Stone was manly. If I hadn’t met him at a gay club, I never would have thought he batted for my team, but every bit of me was so happy he did. It never hurt to have out jocks on the team! He smelled masculine too. Some of that could have been his products that I could smell on myself too, but some of it was just his own natural, earthy scent that I couldn’t get enough of.
As I stared at him, waiting for more, his face shifted to something a little less sexy. His brows pressed down, making him appear unhappy or concerned.
“What?”
“Campbell. Listen. I need to know what else you lied about.”
I chuckled, nervously. “What?” Why the hell did he bring this shit up now, especially when I thought we’d gotten past it?
