BLURB:
Eighteen months ago, tragedy struck Bywater Farm when a riding accident killed Clay Hunter’s lover and traumatized his prize horse, King of Hearts. Clay and King lingered in limbo, surviving but not really living, until a breath of fresh air in the form of Luke Davis, a new groom in the stud barn, revives them both.
When a fall from King’s back sends Luke to the emergency room, Clay watches the shaky foundation of their budding relationship tumble down. Can Clay really love a jockey again, or will his fear of losing another man he loves keep them apart for good?
REVIEW:
You know a story is really good when it’s still lingers on the brain once you’ve finished it.
This book has fresh beginnings and finding love when you’re not looking for it. The characters of this story have faced the loss of someone they loved and cherished. Clay was having a particularly hard time of it because he lost his lover Nick which left their beloved horse King traumatized since he was killed during an accident that involved the poor animal two years prior.
Both horse and owner were still trying to cope with the death of their loved one. The horse would allow very people near it and I can’t help but thinking this was the same for the owner.
Except.. a ranch worker named Luke was able to get through to the traumatized animal which caught the attention of its owner.
This story was about healing, over coming fears and new beginnings. The relationship development between horse and man and eventually man and man was truly touching to read.
The author did a wonderful job telling these men’s stories. You can almost feel the pain and loneliness of the characters including the horse. After all of that paining you really enjoy watching Clay and Luke come together. To watch these men fall for each other, both pushing through their fears and giving in to what they feel for each other was a beautiful thing to read.
Of all the Dreamspun series novellas that I’ve read so far I consider this to be one of my favorites.
