Today we say hello to author A.J Marcus joining us on our blog to talk about new release “Moose Fever”
Character Chemistry
Finding chemistry between two characters can be hard sometimes and other times it’s really easy. When Brock Summers and Landon Weir came into my head, they appeared nearly fully formed and when they had their first scene in “Eagles’ Blood” their chemistry was instant and extreme. They just meshed perfectly and fell hard for each other.
Now that we’re into book 3 of Mountain Spirit Mysteries, they’re about to walk down the aisle and their chemistry is proving to be more than just a flash in the pan. Theirs is a strong enduring love that can overcome anything, bears mauling them, poachers shooting at them, family not understanding them. Through it all they stand by one another and support each other through thick and thin.
They are both workaholics. They share the same interest, our natural world. Physically they are very similar, but that works too, one doesn’t overshadow the other and they can keep up with each other, in all things. Their differences as slight, with Landon being a bit more of a free spirit and Brock being a bit more uptight, but he is a law man, so it’s understandable. When you have a couple of characters that complement each other so well, they are just a joy to write and readers fall as in love with them as they are each other.
I hope everyone enjoys their adventures as much as I like writing them. When characters mesh so well, it’s hard not to get totally wrapped up in them.
Moose Fever by A.J. Marcus
Publisher: DSPP
Release Date: April 12th, 2016
Blurb:
Colorado Parks and Wildlife Officer Brock Summers and his fiancé, wildlife rehabber Landon Weir, are preparing for their wedding when someone starts killing moose along a creek in the northern part of Teller County. As the moose casualties rise, human bodies turn up, and the case is taken over by the sheriff’s office. When a Forestry Service Ranger is killed, the service joins the hunt.
All signs point to one of the many photographers who have been taking pictures of the moose. Then Landon discovers a small piece of gold in the creek and they believe they have a motive, but they’re still lacking solid suspects. Bullets fly as they seek to track down the perpetrator while trying to get everything wrapped up in time for their marriage.

“I love you too. Brock, we’re going to be married soon. I want everyone to be happy for us. If your family can’t be, we’ll understand and let my family and our friends spread the joy for us.”
“Yeah.” Brock pulled Landon tighter against his side. “You know, I’m just glad we don’t have to go to New Mexico like we’d have had to a few years ago. Being able to take care of everything here in Colorado will make things easier.”
“Yep, easier is good. Particularly if we’ve got moose killing people. It might make our lives more interesting for a little while.”
“When was the last time you heard about a moose killing someone?”
“It’s been a while, but I bet if we looked it up online, there’d be something. Probably up in Alaska or somewhere. You know, buffalo kill more people every year than all the predators in North America.”
“Except humans,” Brock grumbled.
Bear, Brock’s huge mixed-breed dog, came in and plopped his massive head on Landon’s knee, then looked up with large, sad brown eyes.
Landon rubbed his shaggy head. “Here’s one predator that doesn’t want to be killing humans.”
Brock laughed. It was the first really happy sound he’d made since he came home just after dark. “Yeah, but he knows where his dog food comes from, and he hasn’t figured out how to open the doors to get out without one of us doing it for him.”
“Yeah.” Landon joined him in the laugh. They always had a lot of laughter around the house, even when they were tired. It was one of the many things he loved about Brock. “Right now, I think he wants to go outside.”
At the mention of the “o” word, Bear’s head came up and he trotted to the front door with his long shaggy tail swinging happily.
Before getting up, Landon kissed Brock. “Don’t worry about it. We’ll get through the wedding. If we’re lucky, your folks will come and be happy for us. If not, you’ve still got me and I’ve got you, and that’s what’s really important.”
Brock hugged him, filling Landon with happiness. “Yeah, I guess that is what’s important.”
Bear whined at the door, and Landon forced himself out of Brock’s arms. He hoped they’d be able to convince Brock’s folks to come for the wedding, but if they didn’t, it was their loss, not his and Brock’s. He’d do everything he could to make sure that his family, both blood and friends, would be there for the two of them offering unconditional love. All he wanted was for Brock to be happy.
A.J. Marcus
A.J. has been writing to pass the time since high school. The stories he wrote helped him deal with life. A few years ago, he started sharing those stories with friends who enjoyed them and he has started sending his works out into the world to share with other people. He lives in the mountains with his extremely supportive husband. They have a lot of critters, including dogs, cats, birds, horses, and rabbits. When not writing, A.J. spends a lot of time hiking, trail riding, or just driving in the mountains. Nature provides a lot of inspiration for his work and keeps him writing. He is also an avid photographer and falconer. Don’t get him started talking about his birds, because he won’t stop for a while.

A.J generously brought along a copy of the first book in the series “Eagle’s Blood” to giveaway!
Leave a comment answering the question “North American animal they’d like to see
featured in a future book”.
The author will pick a winner after two days
Good Luck!
This sounds like the perfect book for me. Definitely going to be looking into this one.
Thanks Debby. Hope you enjoy the read.
Looks like an interesting read. I’ve added it to my wishlist =)
Hmm? North American animal? Maybe a story with the American Bison or Black-tailed Jackrabbit.
Bison or Black-tailed jackrabbits…I actually have plans that include jack rabbits. Bison can be worked on too.
Big cat of some sort Bob cat, lynx, mountain lion etc.
Miranda, you’re in luck. The 4th book in Mountain Spirit Mysteries is “Cougar Chaos”. They guys head up to Steamboat Springs and end up helping out some mountain lions. It’ll be out this fall.
Sounds good fro excerpt, I think a bobcat .
Cornelia, bobcats are definitely on my list of critters to explore in this series.
Otter or wolverine would be different and interesting.
JBST. Both otter and wolverines would be interesting. We don’t have a lot of otters around that I know of…time for a bit of research on where to find them. Wolverines are being quietly reintroduced to Colorado so that gives me something to play with.
New author and series for me to read, going on the TBR list now.
Thanks Laurie. Hope you enjoy the guys.
This series sounds quite interesting, I’m adding it to my wishlist. I’d like to see more foxes featured in books.
Lisa, here’s a link to a free short I did a while back with Landon and Brock and a fox family. But there’s also the chance more foxes will show up sometime.

mountain lion would be good 🙂
Lee, you’ll have to check out book 4 this fall, “Cougar Chaos”. I got the first glimpses of potential covers this afternoon, some nice ideas.
A ruby-throated hummingbird would be cool!
Trix, with the number of ruby-throated hummingbirds we have around here, I bet Landon gets a few in for rehab every year. I know they are a real pain to rehab, so that could provide some good conflict and potential comedy. I’ll keep this in mind. Thanks.
Trix, you’re our winner of the giveaway. If you could send me an email at andy@ajmarcus.com, with your dreamspinner email in it, I’ll have the book added to your dreamspinner bookshelf.
Congrats!
Congrats on your new book, and interesting discussion about chemistry. I’m going out of the norm here for animal. Since I’m originally from Texas, I could say the fictitious Jackalope, but I’ll go with the state mammal, the armadillo. So it might be a little challenging, but it would be cool to have a Texas setting, like Austin or Big D. And how many novels are out there with an armadillo? (maybe for a reason 🙂
Hi AJ. You’re a new to me author! I loved the excerpt. I’m guessing this series should be read in order, yes? More books to add to the list 😀
Oops – I forgot the animal 😉 Well how about a bald eagle? I’m having such fun watching the eaglets in DC on the webcams. Amazing how fast they grow!
Sadonna, The series is set up so it can be enjoyed out of order. Each mystery is stand alone, although the relationship between Brock and Landon does evolve with each book. As far as eagles go, we did have some bald and golden eagle encounters in the first book “Eagle’s Blood” and through the series we’re getting to watch a young golden eagle, Frigga, grow and get ready to go back into the wild (that part is still a few books away)
Sreve, As a Texas boy myself (now transplanted to Colorado) I’ve had a few encounters with armadillos. It might be fun to take the guys to Texas sometime. I’m sure I can come up with a reason for them to visit and I can have one of them endure my fire ant attack. Could be a lot of fun.
Sorry for being slow in doing my pick for a winner, I’ve had lots of technical difficulties the past couple of days.
Our winner for an e-copy of “Eagle’s Blood” is Trix. Trix, if you could send me an email at andy@ajmarcus.com, with your dreamspinner email in it, I’ll have the book added to your dreamspinner bookshelf.
Thanks to everyone for the great comments and things I can incorporate for story ideas. I am to please my readers. Without you folks I’m just a sad guy who let’s his imaginary friends tell him what to type.
