Some time ago I finished the last story in the Love Means… series and after waiting almost a year, I got the idea for a new farm based story. Planting his Dream is not in the same universe, but it does have the same feel as the Love Means stories. I really wanted to have the chance to go back to a farm where the pace of life is slower and closer to the land. Planting his Dream is a story about the haves and the have nots. Foster is managing the family dairy farm with his mother and grandmother after the death of his father. Money is tight and Foster realizes he needs to find other sources of income for the family business. Javi and his family are migrant workers who come to the farm to pick an asparagus crop. They show up early because they have no place else to go. Foster and Javi work together on chores around the farm and slowly begin to realize that they have a lot in common. But Javi and his family are poor and they make theirt living following the crops.
The title comes from the fact that as Foster and Javi get closer, Foster asks Javi about his dreams. Javi confesses that he doesn’t have any. His life is what it is and dreaming only makes him want things he can never have. Foster set out to change that.
Foster dreams of getting away, but after his father’s death, he has to take over the family dairy farm. It soon becomes clear his father hasn’t been doing the best job of running it, so not only does Foster need to take over the day-to-day operations, he also needs to find new ways of bringing in revenue.
Javi has no time to dream. He and his family are migrant workers, and daily survival is a struggle, so they travel to anywhere they can get work. When they arrive in their old van, Foster arranges for Javi to help him on the farm.
To Javi’s surprise, Foster listens to his ideas and actually puts them into action. Over days that turn into weeks, they grow to like and then care for each other, but they come from two very different worlds, and they both have responsibilities to their families that neither can walk away from. Is it possible for them to discover a dream they can share? Perhaps they can plant their own and nurture it together to see it grow, if their different backgrounds don’t separate them forever.
