BLURB:
In a future where man’s ability to reproduce is severely compromised, humanity has adapted to survive. Breeders—male and female—have become precious commodities, and they are strictly guarded and subject to limitations. Luca Walker is a breeder. Though he knows what’s expected of him as the youngest son of the Northern Confederacy’s vice president, he’s held out against the pressures of an arranged marriage because he longs to marry for love, not duty. But he’s been promised to Colonel Liam Smith and there’s little he can do about it, no matter that Luca is secretly in love with his bodyguard, Marcus Gray. When Luca finds himself pregnant with Marcus’s baby, Smith is furious and vows to take what is his—by force, if necessary. Now Luca must fight for his life and the life of his unborn child… as well as the love of Marcus and the happily ever after he’s always dreamed of.
REVIEW:
Mending the Rift is set in a future where earth’s populace is severely compromised. Due to a bomb dropped during WW3, the majority of women have been made almost completely sterile. Because of this situation, scientists have developed a way of making ‘breeders’, by selecting certain men and women to carry babies.
Luca Walker is a breeder and as such an arranged marriage to Colonel Liam Smith has been organised for him so he can fulfil the breeder’s requirement, have as many children as possible. Luca’s own father has given birth to ten children. But, Luca is totally against arranged marriages because he wants to marry for love. Everything would be fine except the man he loves is his bodyguard Marcus Gray. Marcus has been his bodyguard for about a year now and over the year Luca has fallen completely in love with him. As the time draws nearer to Luca’s marriage he decides to run away so that no-one will be able to force him to go through with it! When Marcus finds Luca and takes him home they realise something isn’t right, Luca has been having stomach cramps an extreme pain. Luca’s other bodyguard Keith recognises the symptoms’ as Luca being pregnant!
Because the only way for male breeders to become pregnant is through insemination and the only person to touch Luca is his father who just happens to be the leading reproductive doctor! After multiple tests confirm that the baby is in fact Marcus’s everyone realises that his father had to have been responsible. As soon as Luca realises that he is in fact going to have Marcus’s baby not Liam’s his “nidation process” (the start of the pregnancy when the fertilised egg attaches itself to the uterus), goes a whole lot smoother. Without the stress the pain is dulled to a minimum.
As the pregnancy advances as does Marcus and Luca’s relationship. Because they were able to prove that the baby was Marcus’s the marriage with Liam Smith was cancelled but when he learns of the circumstances behind the cancellation Liam goes crazy and attacks both Marcus and Luca. When he escapes prison Liam and his men kidnap Luca and take him over the border to exchange him for the person that Liam is really in love with. Luca is rescued by Marcus and his men along with his father’s. When they get Luca back home it’s time to concentrate on getting healthy and making sure the baby he’s carrying is delivered full term and as healthy as they can get him.
All-in-all the issues covered in Mending the Rift are a real possibility. I myself would dearly love to see a male pregnant and have to carry a baby to full term! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and have no hesitations in recommending it to everyone.
