When Theodore Davenport decides to switch his mundane job for a career, he walks into Holden House Publishing with enthusiasm and determination to succeed. As he settles into his new role, makes new friends, and dreams of making it to the top, everything is going to plan.
Until he meets James Holden, CEO of Holden House.
James Holden hasn’t been able to stop thinking about his encounter with the timid man he met in a club bathroom last week, and when he discovers the one haunting his dreams is an employee, he can’t seem to stop himself from pursuing him.
Just a little fun – that’s what James tells himself. He can’t afford to care for someone who can never reciprocate, not once they find out who he really is. James believes nobody deserves the burden of being attached to him. He’s a complicated man. Damaged. Difficult. Demanding.
Broken.
Is Theodore strong enough to confront James’ demons? More importantly, is James?
Please note:This book contains scenes of self harm, mental illness and suicidal ideation which may be uncomfortable for some readers.
REVIEW:
Good Lord…damn, this book. This book is a testament to all the people who live with, love, and support unconditionally people with mental illness. I can admit that mental illness hasn’t touched me as close as it did with Theo in Broken but I will admit I don’t know if I could be as strong as he was. Even James was an incredibly powerful character to read. Even going through his worst moments he was blazingly alive on the page which made him and Theo together utterly amazing.
There’s lots of things I feel the reader should experience first hand with a story like this. I think it makes the connection to the reader and the story more explosive and lasting. This is one of those stories that I don’t want to give too much away in the review.
I can express how the moment I started the prologue I didn’t put the book down until it was finished. The writing is absolutely magnificent, everything flowed so well and kept me enthralled. Even the difficult to read bits had me captivated.
This isn’t just a book about mental illness. There’s so much depth here. There’s love, hope, supporting family member that make you feel all warm and fuzzy. This is all surrounding two men who you want only great, amazing things for.
Because of the depth and dynamics this may be the best book I’ve read all year. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
