Jessy works against the clock to keep Raven’s condition hidden from the Captain, but when an acquaintance pays the precinct a visit, she finds time has run out. It’s a man both she and Landon had hoped never to lay eyes on again.
Meanwhile, Bla’Gar seeks out an old friend in hopes of gaining answers to help Raven, wondering if she might leave a very nasty bite of her own instead.
And Niko reflects on his past, that has brought him to the present; one he could never have foreseen.
Some truths are better left unsaid; others…might be too painful to face.
REVIEW:
Welcome to Episode Four of Neon White. When I first read and reviewed the initial installment of this series, I’ll admit that I was intrigued with the idea of writing a book like a television series, with episodes within the season. The entire project has taken longer than I would have hoped because of the author’s other writing projects, but I’m still really liking where he is going with this one.
This current installment is, in my opinion, that part of the story where a lot of pieces are starting to come together to line you up for the big finale. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it is “filler”. But it also doesn’t standalone…like…at all. For those of you in the US, think of it as a “show” like American Horror Story and the next to the last episode of that series….you know something big is coming….but you don’t know what it is yet! I’m going to also tell you that you have to read Episodes 1 – 3 before you read Episode 4 for it to make any sense. Episode 5, the season finale, is coming right behind this one, and I’m glad because I felt this one started kind of mid-air and ended kind of mid-air…but again…similar to a television series.
But enough logistical talk. Let’s talk about our story. All of our characters from the previous installments are back, with varying degrees of exposure in this section. Raven is battling his inner demon after having been bitten by the Strigoi. Bal’Gar is looking for a way to help Raven. Jessy is hiding the whole situation from their boss…who thinks Raven is dead. Things will come to a point though that people will start to wonder why there isn’t a body for the memorial service!
The Alpha of Bal’Gar’s Lycan pack is still missing and in this installment we get set up for events that will happen with him, Raven, and the rest of the cast in Episode Five. We also get some pages in this one dedicated to Bruce and Niko’s backstory. I liked that section and how it sets us up for hearing more about them in the future. I also liked knowing the backstory of Niko’s mother, who you will remember was the pretentious rich woman in the beginning of this entire story who was looking for her son.
I’m going to recommend this installment, but as part of the entire series. Start with Episode One and work your way through. If you start now, you should be done just in time for Episode Five, the season finale to come out. I’ve had a sneak peak and let me tell you…you aren’t going to expect that ending!
