Finally going from fake-boyfriends to the real thing, Spencer Cohen and Andrew Landon are trying to take things slow. They know what they have could be something special and despite the flammable sexual tension, they don’t want to crash and burn.
Spencer is learning to open up, sharing the secrets of his past with Andrew. Afraid to put his heart on the line, yet seemingly unable to stop it, Spencer knows he’s falling in love with him. Andrew is petrified of leaping in blindly, yet it seems the slower they go, the faster they fall.
As they navigate their new relationship, Spencer worries Andrew will freak out when he takes on a new client. But it’s not a normal case and Spencer soon realises things are not what they seem. When things take a downward turn and they work together to help the client, Spencer and Andrew need to decide if they’re ready for the next step.
REVIEW:
YES!!! Oh my god I didn’t think this could possibly be better than the first book, but it was! It really was!
This second book picks up exactly where book one leaves off, I love that, no waiting, no missing scenes, no big gap. As we know from the first book, Spencer is a relationship fixer, posing as a new boyfriend to help win back the ex boyfriend. He is NOT an escort as I saw one clueless reviewer refer to him as…. He helps either get you back together, or show you it’s really over. He performed this service for the hot and nerdy Andrew, but he had an issue. He was having feelings for Andrew and didn’t want him to get back together with Eli, which conveniently Andrew figured out. There was some drinking, and crying on Spencer’s part, and Andrew spent the night. This book starts up the next morning, as Spencer is sobering up and realizing Andrew is still there.
So there are two things going on here, the continuing story of Spencer and Andrew, and how they are moving from fake boyfriends to real boyfriends. It’s awesome, and the one thing I missed from the first book, the sex, is in this one in abundance! Yeah! But they take it slow, Andrew apparently has the tendency to jump in with both feet, and Spencer is a scared bunny. He’s not had a boyfriend before, so they both agree to go slow, date, and mess around, but not go straight for the butt sex. This proves to be difficult for both of them! I loved it.
There is also the story line following Spencer’s new client, a man looking for his missing boyfriend, who has been beaten by his controlling father. Yanni has pulled out of school, quit his job, and isn’t answering phone calls from anyone. Spencer is unimpressed by Lance, the douchey seeming boyfriend, but agrees to see what he can find, even though he’s not a private investigator. Spencer does what he can to see if he can find Yanni. I won’t tell you how it goes, but it was as I expected and it was a good balance to the lightness of Spencer and Andrew.
This series is feeling like one big book to me, with episodes. I loved that there wasn’t a gap between the first and the second books, they just flowed smoothly together. The banter between these two men is so cute and made me laugh. There was a bit of a miscommunication starting between them and I was happy to see the author didn’t follow the typical pattern and let that break them up or turn in to an even bigger issue. That is always so fake feeling. The extra characters from the first book make appearances in this one, plus we meet Andrew’s parents, much to the shock of Spencer. I love that Spencer is so Australian, yet living in LA. Watching Andrew try to understand his Aussie phrases made me laugh! There are so many little things that I love about these books, the catch phrases between the two men, the fake magazine covers they suggest the other is one, it’s all just so cute.
Is this series as good as her Red Dirt Heart series? That’s hard to say. Those were so different, more dramatic and angsty. These books are lighter and shorter, but I’m enjoying them nearly as much. Charlie and Travis definitely have a special place in my heart, but Spencer and Andrew are rapidly sneaking in there to join them.
I loved both of these books and can’t wait to see where these two go next!
