REVIEW:
First off, kudos to the author for writing a unique story. It’s the first time I’ve read a book that literally counts down the hours as events unfold. Some of those worked well, others had me scratching my head. But now I’m getting ahead of myself.
The story gives the reader an insight into a day in the life of three best friends. They all get plenty of page time, which gives the story a ‘first in a series’ feel. I’m not saying that’s good or bad, simply that the story follows the happenings of numerous characters.
With that said, I found myself incredibly lost for the first 20%. So much so I had to put it aside for a day. Then went back, started at the beginning, and wrote notes to get who was who straight in my head. Something I’ve rarely had to do.
As a long time proofreader and a person with a pet hate for the overuse of ‘ly’ words they became annoying at times. More so when there were four or more to a page, as all of these lines were – “Lane drank slowly. Watching Allison nervously. Allison drank quickly. Allison gave a thumbs up and breathed deeply. Allison breathed shallowly.” Pet peeve aside there was only one typo.
The main players are Allison who is marrying her trans lover Jason. Her besties Lane and Slim. Joy visiting for the wedding, she is pan and hooks up with Slim. Slim being a bulky black woman who blushes all the time. Pabla, who is Lane’s on again off again girlfriend. And further on, David and his boyfriend, who drop the bomb that David is pregnant, something that is left for the reader to fill in the blanks.
Joy doesn’t do relationships, and introduces Slim to the delights of uncomplicated sex, those two steam up many pages throughout. Lane and Pabla have been estranged for 6 months, their relationship is complicated to say the least, but hey sex fixes a lot of things right? Did I mention there’s plenty of heated scenes between the ladies in this book?
Now while I’m all for sexy time, I would have loved to have seen more intimacy between Allison and Jason. There’s naught until the very end when they consummate their marriage. Which is also the first time Allison gets to see Jason in the flesh. This brings me back to the time line. They leave the wedding at 8pm, which to me was rather early but hey some things can’t wait right, got an itch and all that. However, when the clock ticks 11pm and Jason is snoring and Allison turns on the television to watch the final episode of Storage Locker, any semblance of romance was lost on me.
I recommend this story as a lighthearted read, featuring three close friends and many sexual liaisons.
