BLURB:
Ivoire, the packmaster’s Omega cousin, has gone and gotten himself in a family way. Abandoned and alone, he and the pup he carries are in need of sanctuary.
There’s not much packmaster Lewis can do about Ivoire’s situation beside busting heads and making the bastard responsible pay. And — while he’s away — making sure the young Omega finds himself safe in the hands of Zachariah, a widowed Alpha who’s turned his back on the rest of the world.
Zachariah is everything Ivoire needs, and Ivoire is nothing Zachariah thought he’d ever want again, but nothing good was ever gained from playing by the rules.
REVIEW:
Zachariah lost everything when he lost his mate and child; living on the fringes of his pack is the closest he wants to come to anyone else while he nurses his grief. When he finds an Omega hiding amongst his overgrown garden, his first inclination is to ignore the man until those searching for him go away but when he finds out the Omega is pregnant, it stirs long forgotten feelings and protective instincts Zachariah never thought he’d feel again. Ivoire has no problem with the reality of raising his child alone but there’s something about the wounded Alpha that tugs at his heart. With only a few days until his cousin comes to collect him and the possibility of an unwanted mating looming on the horizon, will he be able to break through the walls around Zachariah’s heart or will he fail and leave the Alpha to continue on alone?
I liked this one a lot more than the first book in the series. I found the overall story set up was better and more interesting and I enjoyed the character interactions much more as well. Zachariah was a sweet, gentle man who lost everything and in turn pushed the rest of the world away so he could grieve in peace. While meeting Iviore brings up feelings and memories he’d rather have kept locked away, he still wants to keep him and the child he carries safe. Iviore was sweet and cottoned on fairly quickly to what had hurt Zachariah so badly. While gentle and quite giving, he also had a core of strength to him that I liked. The story does move along very quickly and while it wasn’t quite insta-love, it did happen within the span of a few days. Even if I didn’t completely believe the love aspect of the story, I did find it completely believable that the two would have gotten there in time, probably still quicker than other people.
The epilogue was a nice little look at the couple’s life several years down the road, which I liked, though my favorite part of the book was when the packmaster showed up at the end to collect Iviore. Sneaky Lewis, very sneaky! This was a nice quick read that kept me entertained with a minimum amount of discord; I’ll certainly look at whichever book comes out next as I did like this one more than the first. That could also be my ridiculous love of m-preg and shifters talking but I’m okay with that. 😀
