ABOVE AND BEYOND
Maxwell Lewis is proud of the life he’s made. Having turned tragedy into triumph, he’s now a beloved member of a Target Airlines cabin crew with more than his fair share of attention both in the air and on the ground. But lately he’s wanted something more than the occasional hook-up or sometime sex buddy—particularly after meeting game designer and passenger Gibson Henry.
Talented and driven, Gibson has built a company ready to be the next big thing in gaming. Devoted to his work, he takes onetime pleasures where he find them and never does repeats…which is what he tells handsome, sexy Maxwell Lewis after a little mile-high flight attendance. But a chance encounter in a London club is about to change things forever. Two men, one who’s flown solo and another who’s only ever played alone, are about to find that at some point all games come to end, it’s time to bare your heart and try for love.
REVIEW:
I think this is the first book I have read by Susan Mac Nicol and it was an enjoyable book.
Maxwell has some issues in his past, a life on the streets when he was a teenager, and he has been a loner ever since. He’s worked hard to get past it, and is now a flight attendant for an airline in England. He has a small apartment, a few friends, and keeps his stuff all where he can see it. He’s been a fan of the one night stand, but has recently decided he needs to give up his spreadsheet tracking his men (that was kinda weird!) and find someone to settle down with. After one more quickie in the bathroom on a plane….
With Gibson, the cute little game designer. Gibson is also a big fan of the one night stand, and happy to stay that way. After the quickie and subsequent brush off of the hot flight attendant, he is surprised to run in to the man again, and be rescued by him (in a weird Karate Kid scenario…) when he is harassed at a bar. The two hook up again, chat a bit, but move on. Eventually they decide to try dating to see where things go. Maxwell’s past starts to come out and cause problems, and Gibson has some family drama, that adds to this story to give it some interest.
So I liked this story, it was a fast read for me, but I didn’t love it and I don’t even know why. There were a few weird scenes, but I think it’s because I’m not sure I really liked Gibson and Maxwell. Gibson was a bit of a shit at times, he seemed to string Maxwell on a bit, knowing he wanted more but not really willing to commit, until Maxwell finally proved his worth with his family issue. Maxwell was odd too, I get he’s got problems in his past, but he does something that really hurt Gibson that threw me off, and I don’t think Gibson dealt with it as well as he should have.
I haven’t read any of the other books in this series, this seemed ok as a standalone but I’m wondering if it would have helped me like it more if I was more familiar with Susan’s writing style, and the world she set this book in. Yes, it’s London, but there are other characters mentioned that I didn’t know, and things like that. I did go see other reviews to see if it was just me that couldn’t get in to this one, it looks folks liked it, but they all had read the other books in the series and talked about how this one fit in.
I did like it, I liked the slightly snarky quality of it, the characters were ok for me, the sex was good, there was a connection between Maxwell and Gibson but it was slow to come, and I did like the ending. The writing was good, the plot was interesting, and there was a bit of drama. I’m not sure why I didn’t get in to it, I think I need to try the first book from the series and see if that helps….
