BLURB:
A life full of children and mysteries to solve doesn’t leave much time for relaxation or each other, something Lumie wants to help fix for Dane and Mercury by way of arranging a picnic. But good intentions and life rarely cooperate, and Dane knows it’s only a matter of time before all hell breaks loose.
Hell turns out to be someone using Quicksilver’s name to destroy buildings, but there’s no way to tell whether the enemy is an impostor or a trap—and only one way to find out. Hopefully it won’t mean missing the picnic.
REVIEW:
I absolutely adored the first book in this series, and this second story is a cute follow-up that definitely satisfied my craving for more.
It’s been five years since the events in Dragon Consultant brought Dane and his dragon lover, Mercury together. Well…Dane, Mercury and a house full of rambunctious dragon kits. Dane is still kept busy as the top consultant for all things supernatural and Mercury has recently taken a job working for what is kind of the paranormal version of the FBI. Which puts both of them in the perfect position to carry on their work to find the missing dragons and bring down the evil group of humans who are holding them captive. And of course, their kits are always willing to lend a hand, whether they asked for the help or not.
Dragon Deception is definitely a sequel to Dragon Consultant and should not be attempted as a standalone. Even I got confused at first with trying to remember who all the dragon kiddies were and it wasn’t all that long ago that I read the first book. Having said that, I wouldn’t even consider saying that there are too many characters to remember because the house full of kits is what makes this series so special. On top of the characters you need to already know, there is also the continuing story plot that you need to be familiar with.
Actually, the plot made little progress through this story. It was a continuation of the series but is obviously not the end. Nothing at all is resolved, though that doesn’t mean nothing happens. More dragons are rescued and Mercury sees some action in his new job.
As with the first book in the series, there is no conflict between the main characters and no on page sex, but that suited me just fine, as I read this author for the fantasy rather than the drama. I’ve said before that Mell Eight fascinates me with the detail that she includes in her fantasy books, and again, that was evident here. I particularly liked the rune inscribed battering ram that the police use to break down spell-protected doors. It’s the little details that sell this author’s work to me.
The covers of this series, in my opinion, are just fantastic. To be honest, I’ve seen on Goodreads that readers either love them or hate them, but either way, it gets the books noticed, right? Personally, I absolutely adore them, and think they’re a perfect snapshot of what you’ll discover between the covers.
