REVIEW:
Survival Sex
Get use to that term because it is referred to a lot in this book. And, yes, it is a real term and means exactly what it implies, to exchange sex for means to to survive. Either for a place to live, money for food, sometimes, however not in this book, to get drugs. It seems it is used mostly to define teenage runaways. But it is most common with gay teens forced on to the street after their sexuality is revealed. It is the lowest and most disgusting thing that a child should have to endure but let’s call it what it really is…child prostitution! A kid having to sell their body to survive. It is reprehensible but happens way too much.
Rescued is the story of Colt Adams, a gay boy, who was forced on the street by his abusive father, who literally threw him out of their house when his forced admittance of being gay is revealed. Fast forward from 16 to 19 ½. He is now in nursing school at Brooklyn State College. My first big problem with that is…how did he finish High School on the streets while trying to survive? Nursing school is highly competitive to get accepted into. That aside, I was thrown back by the opening sequence. He is a Survival Sex survivor who is quiet and timid, almost like a virgin, even though he had sold his body to survive. I know that he never dated, so he is a newbie to the dating scene, but he should have some kind of street sense after that long. Everyone knows that you don’t leave a drink unattended at a bar!!! Common sense!
This is the second book that I have read of Shaye Evans. I am picking up a theme of discarded youth that their fathers are so disgusted with their sexual preference that they throw them out with nothing but the clothes on their backs. This book just had too many holes. I couldn’t get into the story. I tried but was never sucked in like when I love a book. I know it is a short story but the Colt/Chris thing just didn’t work for me. I liked the characters and felt some compassion for them. Thought that they were kindred spirits but couldn’t get into the story. It felt too rushed.
