After the loss of her baby, Katherine Roberts’s life spirals into depression and agoraphobia. Married to John, who clearly makes her existence miserable as he lays blame on her shoulders, she unpredictably befriends a neighbour, Anna, whose recently deceased mother lived across the street. Anna is bi-sexual and after splitting from her cheating long term girlfriend, had found solace with a few one night stands with men. But there’s one man who will turn out to be her biggest regret.
As Katherine’s friendship builds with Anna, she begins to find herself sexually attracted to her and soon after, the relationship goes beyond just friends…
REVIEW:
This is the first story I’ve read by this author and she certainly has a unique way of crafting a tale.
The thing I loved the most, was how totally thought provoking the story was. How does someone cope with the loss of a child? Even before birth, the child is a part of a woman, loved from the moment of conception. The next question is how does a partner deal with not only the loss of a child but an emotionally distraught wife? And how long can he have his emotional needs pushed aside before he seeks comfort elsewhere? Many readers will think John’s an arse, but the time between the death of the baby and him becoming a jerk is off page, so I found myself unable to dislike him.
I felt sad for the couple that they lost their way. I think when tragedy strikes it either makes a couple stronger or, as in this case, drives them apart. On top of that, Katherine develops agoraphobia, which layered on another life altering problem for the couple to deal with.
Anna moves in across the street. I enjoyed watching the women’s friendship grow. I didn’t enjoy the sneaking around and cheating. With that said, there’s no descriptive sex in this story.
John and Katherine finally hit a wall making them face their demons. I’m please Katherine got well, although I would have liked to read more about that. It was a long hard road for all of these characters to get to where they wanted to be. I’m pleased the story ended the way it did, even though I felt it ended a little too quickly.
