When a professional relationship turns personal, it’s impossible to resist the law of attraction.
Alec Rowland is a high-flying lawyer in a London firm whose career is his life. He doesn’t have time for relationships and his sexuality is a closely guarded secret. After picking up a cute guy on a Friday night, Alec’s world is rocked to its foundations when his one night stand shows up in the office on Monday morning—as the new temp on his team.
Ed Piper is desperate to prove himself in his new job. The last thing he needs is to be distracted by a crush on his boss. It’s hard to ignore the attraction he feels, even though Alec’s a difficult bastard to work for.
Both men strive to maintain a professional relationship, but tempers fray, passions ignite, and soon they’re both falling hard and fast. If they’re ever going to find a way to be together, Alec needs to be honest about who he really is because Ed won’t go back in the closet for anyone.
REVIEW:
I know as soon as I see a new Jay Northcote book announcement that I need to get it on my review list. I always enjoy them, they always have well written characters, a believable storyline and are always spotlessly edited. Besides those things, they are always a really good read. This one is not an exception. I really enjoyed The Law of Attraction.
Alec Rowland is a closed book. He works constantly, always being the first one in the office and the last one out. Usually to the tune of 15 to 16 hours a day, and also on weekends. He has no time for a relationship, so meets his needs through bar hook-ups that lead to only one night stands. No one, except for his beard, Belinda, even suspect that he is gay! He is past thirty, but still firmly entrenched in the closet. I did really enjoy the background story on why Alec is still in that closet. I thought it brought depth to the character and made him much more understandable. Something in his past broke him. Of course I’m not telling you what.
Ed Piper is out one night with friends when a tall dark handsome man quite brazenly stalks him at the bar. You guessed it, the man is Alec. They go home to Alec’s home and have one of the best nights that either of them can remember. But sadly the next morning Alec, who never lets men sleep over, panics and almost pushes Ed out the door. Ed thought they had a connection, but it was not meant to be.
Then Monday morning arrives and Ed reports to his new temporary position with a large prestigious law firm. Who does his new boss turn out to be? If you read the blurb you already know.
About that. There were a lot of spoilers in the blurb on this one. I think I would have enjoyed not knowing about the office piece until later. Because I knew about the new boss thing before I read it, as does everyone who reads the blurb, I think it took away a little from the story. I would have liked to feel Ed’s feelings more at being tossed out the door. But at the same time…that complication was kind of what made me pick up the book!
I loved this story. I definitely recommend it for anyone who enjoys a good workplace, coming out, life complications story. Will they work out their issues before the end of the book, or will Alec’s fear destroy what they have before it even begins? Alec isn’t the coming out sort of guy after all. I recommend you pick it up and read it to find out what happens!
