BLURB:
Money can’t buy happiness. Jacob Nussbaum knows this better than anyone. He’s a corporate lawyer deep inside a huge New York firm, where he works overtime, sacrifices any chance at a personal life, and has been selling his soul for years. With a secretary as his only friend, he trudges on, until his whole world is blown apart by a manila envelope of photos—evidence that one of the firm’s partners is the dirtiest lawyer in one hell of a filthy business.
In search of the truth, Jacob travels to a small northern Wisconsin fishing resort. There he meets Ben Anderson, a brutally lonely man, who knocks him off his feet. Ben prompts Jacob to reevaluate his life. He’s a dozen years older than Jacob, still recovering from the death of his long time love, and doesn’t want to leave anyone a widower. But a jaded New Yorker on a soul-searching mission might be just the man to convince the grieving Ben that it’s never too late to begin again.
REVIEW:
I’ve never read any of the books by Dev Bentham, and I now believe that might have been an oversight on my part. If this book is anything to go by, this lady can write! I very much enjoyed this current book, and already have my eye on another on Kindle Unlimited to start soon!
Jacob Nussbaum is a very successful New York attorney, working for a large prestigious law firm, as a full Partner. He makes a bundle of money, but he also works seven days a week, has only one friend…his assistant, and lives on take-out food. Surprisingly he does find time for the gym, so is in great shape.
His world is rocked one day though when he finds an unmarked envelope containing very explicit photos of the effects of a case he had worked as a negotiator on. There is evidence that the whole settlement was a fraud, and one of the other Partners is corrupt as hell. But where can he go from here? As the blurb says, he heads off to a small Wisconsin town and a fishing resort to track down a retired lawyer who might have been bribed to throw the case related to the photos. What he finds instead is a man named Ben.
Ben Anderson owns the resort and has lived there in a cabin alone since his long-time partner died of cancer a couple years previously. The last thing Ben is looking for is a hot young lawyer from New York!
The last thing either of them is looking for is a relationship! What will happen when events keep bringing them together? A darned good read, that’s what!
What I found refreshing about this story was the men’s ages. Ben is 50 and Jacob is 36. It was so nice to read a book where the characters weren’t twenty-somethings. I really enjoy reading about characters my own age! So many authors in this genre seem to think if a character is over thirty, then they are too old to be in the story. I loved the comparisons drawn to the difference between Manny’s and Ben’s ages and then between Ben’s and Jacob’s and the difficulties that cross-generational relationships incur. I also liked the characters of Pinky and Ed in Chicago, although I would have liked to see more of them! No one ever includes the older gay generation in their books. Kudos Ms. Bentham for your inclusion.
I really liked this story. I would definitely recommend it to you all. If you enjoy a story of less than perfect and slightly broken characters, fighting to overcome the odds….then pick it up, I think you’ll enjoy it. It was well written, and very well edited. I know that I have found another author to add to my “must read” list going forward!
