BLURB:
Jude Garrity visits the farmers market every Saturday. As an environmental engineering student, he’s curious about living off the grid and sustainable agriculture.
And one particular farmer.
Hudson Oliva has worked hard to support his commune, where queer people live without fear of harm or retribution. When Jude asks pointed questions about living there, Hudson realizes he needs to be honest about his home. Few people know what the farm is actually about, but Jude is insistent.
Jude moves to Kaleidoscope Gardens, however his sexual hang-ups make it hard to adjust. He’s an uptight virgin living among people who have sex freely and with multiple partners. When Jude finally loosens up, Hudson is flooded with emotions. Falling for Jude wasn’t part of Hudson’s life plan. But when vindictive rumors about the commune begin to spread, love might be all he has left.
REVIEW:
I read this blurb and though “cool, a farmer’s market”! We are a family that supports the farmers and the farmer’s markets in our area. What I mean by support is that we get our organic veggies and fruits from the big one in our area each week. Our daughter started us on this when she was in college at Portland State University and they had one right by her dorm. Then our daughter-in-law got a job at the same one and has been supplying us with the best produce ever since. Imagine my huge surprise when I started reading this book and realized it was OUR farmer’s market! I live in the suburbs of Portland and this is the market that keeps our family in good, fresh produce the entire time it is open! I then was worried, what if the writer gets it wrong, but she wrote it spot on. I don’t know if she has visited our market, or just realized how “organic” our area has become, but it was like she was living here. Then I thought about the communes. I have never visited the ones in our area but I do know that they exist. And I know that Portland is known for being: ecologically friendly, gay friendly and supportive, looking all the time for other sources to support the ecosystem and how to limit our carbon footprint on earth. This writer did her research. She also got it totally correct in that, while most newer farmers are leaning towards doing farming the innovative and environmentally friendly way, the old timers are having a very hard time with the changes. They also aren’t real welcoming to new, different-than-them people moving into their rural areas and doing a lot of changes that they don’t understand. It is like she is living right here and experiencing it first hand. The urban area is very forward thinking but when you get to our rural areas they can tend to be a bit old fashion and stubborn. I was thrilled to have a book that showcased us in such a progressive way.
I have never read a book on commune living and this was quite interesting. The commune is very sexually free and liberating. I am not sure I could walk around naked, but the practice of clothing optional and open sex was quite interesting. It was done tastefully and enriched the story. It could have easily taken on an orgy feel but I was thankful it didn’t. The sex was hot but was important to the story line. The characters were well written and I loved the supporting ones too. I have discovered that this is the first in a new series. I think that is why so many characters were introduced, both main characters and supporting ones. I am really looking forward to the next in this series. I have a feeling that I have just found a “must have” one!!!
