TITLE: Otter Chaos (includes Tail Slide)
AUTHOR: P. D. Singer
PUBLISHER: Rocky Ridge Books
LENGTH: 276 Pages
RELEASE DATE: October 9, 2015
Blurb:
Lon Ewing snowboarded in and turned economist Corey Levigne’s life upside down, introducing him to a world he didn’t know existed. Corey’s still adjusting to a boyfriend who shifts into an otter and raids the koi pond—and now Lon says Corey’s department chair is a werewolf?
Wolves at the university, wolves in the bank—across Lon’s desk sits Professor Melvin Vadas and his hench-wolves, demanding a construction loan for the pack’s new lodge in the mountains. There’s just one little problem: the proposed building site is home to a breeding population of rare fish.
What do wolves care for stupid human rules, an otter who’d barely make a good snack, or one pesky man determined to protect the environment? Once they’re snout to snout with Corey and Lon there’s more than silverscale dace on the Endangered Species list.
Includes Tail Slide
Fresh powder snow and running water in the Colorado back country call Lon like the moon calls the wolves. Belly-sliding to a good time on the weekends makes up for a workweek at a desk, and meeting Corey adds a whole new level of fun to snowboarding.
It’s easy to slip away for time alone in the woods without raising suspicion, but how’s Lon to entertain himself when bad snow and a worse spill force them off the mountain too early?
Never give an otter a box of Cheerios.
Review:
It’s well-known that I love shifter stories but I’d never read one where the main character was an otter until now. And I’m so glad I did.
It took me exactly three and a half minutes to fall head over heels in love with Lon and not much longer to come to adore Corey.
I started with Tail Slide, the short that introduces us to our intrepid heros. It starts out fast and slippery on the snowboarding slopes where a chance meeting leads to snuggles and sweetness and eventually, a lot of smiles.
From the first time Lon shifts, the author does an amazing job of letting the reader see things from Lon the otter’s point of view. When he’s an otter, he’s all animal, playful and fun and adorable but still retains enough of two-footed Lon’s personality to help him find his way back to the man he’s quickly coming to love.
Corey? He’s amazing. His reaction to finding out his boyfriend get’s furry every once a while and likes to nibble on something a little more lively than sushi is endearing and completely spot on. Watching them work the kinks out is so much fun and of course the sex scenes definitely add to the whole appeal.
When we move onto Otter Kaos, well, the title really does say it all.
Corey has a hard time accepting that his boss is a werewolf, but it doesn’t take long for him to see the truth. When he realizes that his boyfriend might really be in danger he never hesitates in throwing himself between Lon…in whatever form he’s in…and anything that’s coming for him.
When I realized that the “climax” of the story wasn’t really the end of it, things got even better. Watching Corey take care of Lon and help him find his way back to him was heart-warming and heart-wrenching at the same time. Once again the author doesn’t shy away from showing us Lon’s frustration with his struggle to stay human and I love how we are taken along for the ride.
It’s been a while since I’ve been so swept away by a story but this one totally grabbed me and didn’t let me go from start to finish.
The bad guy, Melvin Vadas isn’t all he seems either. He’s smart, smarmy and definitely all wolf, but maybe not all bad either.
I have no problem recommending this story to everyone and it will be sitting at the very top of my to-be-read-again pile very soon.
