BLURB:
Jeremey has been an unrepentant troublemaker since the day he learned to walk, with no intention of slowing down—until the day tragedy struck.
Now a young man, Jeremey seeks to make amends for his wild youth and fulfill an unspoken promise he once made years ago to the people of Noman. All he needs is a dragon and a chance to prove himself, which is easier said than done in the face of a crashed spaceship, hostile aliens, a deadly plague, and interstellar war.
Still, if there’s anyone up to the task, it’s Jeremey Jasper, troublemaker extraordinaire.
REVIEW:
Jeremey Jasper had never met a person he didn’t want to prank; stolen pies, hidden items…nothing and no one was safe when Jeremey was feeling mischievous. An unforeseen and unexpected tragedy changes all of that, however, and the need to cause trouble is replaced with a need to protect; one he’ll make happen regardless of what anyone else says. When the war that no one knew was being fought suddenly breaks the everyday life on Noman, however, Jeremey finds that there’s more to protecting his home than just going out on patrol. Big changes are coming to Noman and if Jeremey wants to keep his promise, he’ll have to change, too.
What a difference one book makes! The first book in the series was really short and more on par with the first episode in a serial story but this one has taken the initial set up and run off into the sunset. Those that have read the first book will remember Jeremey as the kid that Charlie is always trying to reign in but in this book he’s grown up and grown out of causing trouble for everyone around him. I loved seeing what Jeremey made of himself even if the path getting there was rocky and full of pain and I thought the transition was well done. You don’t get to see the changes happen but it was easy to see the child inside of the grown up presented in this book.
The dragons were another surprise as you get to learn a great deal more about them than just the tidbits dropped in the first book. I honestly wasn’t expecting anything that happened and I thought that was just great. The pacing was spot on and the secondary characters were just as interesting as the main characters; I’m hoping I’ll see at least some of them again in the future because they brought a nice diversity to the overall story. There were also more sci-fi elements in this installment which actually worked really well yet still left the general feel of the setting intact; I just really found myself enjoying this a lot. Quite a bit happened in this book but it never felt like too much and I’m actually really looking forward to the next book because I can’t wait to see where the author goes from here.
