When I leave, I never return the same
Pretending came far too easily for Sullivan Black. One of the reasons he rejected his privileged family and joined the FBI. But those dangerous assignments take something from him every time, leaving him a mess, unfamiliar even to himself. As he struggles to shed the skin of his latest op, he finds solace in the most random of places.
Bar manager, Carter Renault’s only intention was to escort the lonely stranger out of his place before he locked up. Yet somehow they end up in an alley, Carter’s pants around his ankles. Their encounter is intense. A onetime thing. Except months later Sullivan is sneaking through Carter’s window, appearing and disappearing at random. The blistering-hot sex doesn’t hide the obvious torment Sullivan is going through, but Carter doesn’t want to be caught in the middle.
Just when he thinks he’s seen the end of that undercover life, Sullivan gets pulled back in. But this time, his identity is no longer a secret, and the aggressive need he has for Carter could get the other man killed. To set everything right, Sullivan has to face the one man he loves and hates in equal measure… his twin.
REVIEW:
Knots….knots….I was tied up in so many knots reading this story. It was killing me what Sullivan had to endure, gut wrenching, truly gut wrenching! But that’s how Avril Ashton tells a story and I love it. I expect and appreciate the wide range of emotions Avril Ashton pulls from me with her stories. This one is no exception. I am so invested in these characters, it’s not even funny. There’s so many secrets so many things I need to know. These are just so damn good and friggin HOT as all get out!!!! WHEWWW!!!!
Sullivan Black lives his life in the shadows. Being a FBI agent affords him the anonymity to bring the bad guys to justice while battling the demons that threaten to take him under. Sullivan has a lot of baggage; a twin brother who is a psychopath, negligent deceased parents, and what he sees as an inability to love. One night while out trying to drink his pain away he meets Carter Renault.
Carter manages his late brother in laws bar. As soon as Sullivan walks into the bar Carter watches him. He can tell immediately how haunted he is. A rough initial meeting turns into a very hot exchange in an alley…both men are hooked.
One of the many things I love about Avril Ashton is she creates these characters that are so beat down, so tortured that you can’t help but want them to have that happiness. You want so badly for them to heal and have hope. Her stories are painful and beautiful and hopeful, I just love them.
This story was great. Such great characters, suspenseful, amazing plot…a great prequel to what is shaping up to be an unforgettable series. Recommend!!!

Avril’s stories are always great. I can’t wait for the Loose Ends books. I think we get Levi and Van’s story first. 🙂
