BLURB:
Dr. Jeff Martin has spent five years as a rural general practitioner on the Isle of Wight hiding the fact he’s gay. He travels in secret to see his partner, Tris, but when he discovers Tris has been cheating on him, he ends their relationship. Then Jeff meets island native Cameron Gillard. Cameron is down to earth, lively, and treats Jeff like he’s the most important person in Cameron’s life. Jeff blooms under Cameron’s attention, and he decides to come out to his colleagues and friends.
Just when things are going well, Tris reappears out of the blue. Jeff is no longer interested in Tris, but it seems he has two men to convince. Tris, who can’t believe Jeff is serious about wanting to end their relationship, and Cameron, who can’t hide his jealousy of Tris. Jeff is certain about one thing—the only man he wants in his life is Cameron. Now he just needs to prove it to Cameron.
REVIEW:
For the last decade, Jeff has traveled back and forth between his home on the Isle of Wight and Manchester to visit his boyfriend of ten years, Tris. This latest trip doesn’t go quite as planned, however, when Jeff discovers Tris has been cheating on him and he ends the relationship on the spot. Heartbroken, Jeff just wants to go home to lick his wounds in private but a chance run in with the grandson of one of his favorite patients has him changing his mind. Can Cameron convince Jeff they belong together or will Tris manage to tear them apart?
I enjoyed this book for the most part; Jeff and Cameron are both likeable characters and I found the secondary characters interesting as well. If you’ve read the Isle of Wight series, you’ll recognize most of them but if you haven’t, that won’t impact your enjoyment or understanding of this novel. I thought the pacing was good and while the relationship moved at a slightly faster pace than I expected, I didn’t have a problem with it; I took it as a sign that Jeff realized just how bad things were with Tris and that he was making an effort to move forward with his life. The one part of the book I had a problem with was Cameron’s reaction to the text he found on Jeff’s phone; with how strong his belief in Jeff was at the beginning, and how understanding he was of the situation, it didn’t make any sense to me. I know his reaction was explained but it still didn’t jive with who Cameron has been the rest of the story. The book ended well and could be read as a standalone but I plan to continue the series; I’m hoping Logan’s story will be next.
