TITLE: My Hometown
AUTHOR: S.J.D Peterson
PUBLISHER: Dreamspinner Press
LENGTH: 200 pages
BLURB:
Jimmy Brink and Eric Halter grew up together in a small country town. While Eric has always been content with life as a rancher, Jimmy wanted more and moved to Chicago early on to pursue a medical career.
Life has a way of coming back around. When Jimmy’s parents decide to retire in Florida, Jimmy returns to his hometown to finish his residency at a local hospital. Flamboyant boyfriend Oliver in tow, Jimmy bumps into his old friend. Eric quickly takes a disliking to Oliver though, and for good reason. Oliver proves he’s not only self-centered but also a cheater.
When Jimmy finds out, he sends Oliver packing, not knowing Oliver is vengeful and maybe even teetering toward insane. Soon Jimmy and Eric are fighting to take back their hometown, while Eric finds it more and more difficult to hide his attraction to his best friend.
REVIEW:
I absolutely LOVE SJD Peterson as an author. Even this story, which I did NOT love but the writing was spectacular. I think the only reason I finished this book was because this author really knows how to write story. My biggest issue were the characters. I was so disappointed in my lack of connection to them. Not to mention how unbelievably ridiculous Oliver was and how big of a part he played in the story. From the blurb I imagined him being kicked to the curb early on and then Jimmy and Eric beginning their romance, taking their friendship and past to new “romantic” levels. This did happen but FRICK it took FOREVER!!!!!! It was hard to combat my irritation over Oliver and my lack of connection to the characters.
Jimmy and Eric grew up together in a small country town in the middle of nowhere. Friends when they were younger, Jimmy left to go to school in the big city and see what life would be like outside his small town. A few years later he’s back and runs back into Eric but unfortunately he has his current boyfriend Oliver with him. Like I mentioned Oliver is unlikeable and Eric picks up on it almost immediately. Eric also is struggling with his attraction to Jimmy. He knows they were good friends at one point but now he’s experiencing another level of emotion and he’s not quite sure what to do with it.
There’s lots of things that go on here. Oliver is deadest on revenge and it feels he’s constantly present which is annoying.
Again, my issues were the characters. Even Jimmy and Eric weren’t all that likeable. Unfortunately, this one was just ok for me but I really wanted to love it.
HUGE shout out to this cover….HOLY F WORD…the cover deserves at least a 1.5 all by itself….DAMN!!!
