TITLE: Magpie
SERIES: Avian Shifters #2
AUTHOR: Kim Dare
PUBLISHER: Self-Published
LENGTH: 251 Pages
BLURB:
Everet has found his perfect place in the nest. As a raven, he’s ideally suited to his new role in the nest’s security flock. Some of the jobs it entails have been far more enjoyable than others, but when he’s called to retrieve a magpie, who’s got himself into trouble in a local human club, it becomes a truly life changing experience.
Magpie shifters have always been looked down on by other avians. Just as attracted to shiny things in their human bodies as they are in their avian forms, everyone knows they’ll do anything for money—and they’re not above stealing what they can’t get by more honest means.
Kane knows what being a magpie means, and he’s got the bruises to show for it. When Everet rescues him from his latest scrape, Kane knows better than to believe the raven will actually take an interest in him and his welfare, but it’s just possible that Everet is different to any other man Kane has ever met.
Please Note: This book is best read in order as part of the Avian Shifters series. The previous stories are Duck! and Celebrate.
Please also note: This is the second edition of this title. It has been tweaked and re-edited, but the story hasn’t changed.
REVIEW:
Out of all Kim Dare’s Avian Shifters books, I love this one the most. The story begins when Everet goes to a human establishment to find a magpie that has gotten into trouble. He finds Kane and rescues him from dangerous men, but when he returns Kane to the nest, the elders want to lock the bird away. Although Magpies have a bad reputation, plus Kane has track marks and a record of prostitution, Everet believes Kane can be saved. Everet takes Kane on as his submissive, which means taking full responsibility for his actions. Before long, Everet starts to fall for the sassy young magpie, but before they can love each other, Kane must learn to behave, trust, and stop stealing.
This was such a hot and spicy book. Kane was a brat from the beginning, and though Everet inspired different feelings in him, Kane still had difficulty believing he could have more than the life of a prostitute and thief. I thought it was so beautiful when Kane finally started to believe he could have more and that Everet might truly have feelings for him. However, every time Kane doubted it was possible, my heart broke a little. It seemed that no matter what Everet did, he couldn’t prove to Kane that he was more than just an object to him. I also loved the way Everet became fiercely possessive of Kane. Kane was his and anyone who interfered needed to watch out. Additionally, the sex scenes were extremely hot. Though we saw glimpses of Ori in the book, it was Raynard who played a bigger role. Despite Raynard’s involvement with the couple and the author’s advisory to read the series in order, I think that this book could easily be read separately. I recommend Magpie to anyone who loves domination and submission, m/m shifter fantasy, and m/m romance.
