TITLE: Dragon Consultant
SERIES: Supernatural Consultant #1
AUTHOR: Mell Eight
PUBLISHER: Less Than Three Press
LENGTH: 30,000 Words
BLURB:
The FAA has been struggling with dragons attacking their planes, and hire Dane, a supernatural consultant, to look into the matter. What Dane finds in the woods is not quite the problem he expected: a group of dragon kits and their sick father.
When he learns the real reason the family was in the woods, his case only grows more dangerous, and while Dane is plenty experienced at watching his own back, taking care of baby dragons and their handsome, distracting father almost makes danger look easy.
REVIEW:
I don’t read fantasy. Correction, I don’t read fantasy except for Mell Eight, and Dragon Consultant is a perfect example of why I bend the rules for this author.
Dane, by reputation, is the premier consultant on everything supernatural. Humans and other supernaturals alike contact Dane when they have a paranormal problem that needs attention. Even the government uses Dane on occasion. So when Dane sees on the news that Dragons have been chasing planes near three major airports, he’s just waiting for that phone call to come through. But what he discovers isn’t something he’s seen before. A family of dragons, one father and five kits plus an egg, who are in desperate need of his help.
Once again Mell Eight left me enchanted with the worlds she creates. True, this world isn’t so different from the one we inhabit now, aside from the fact that paranormals live along side humans, but it’s the little details that are important. When I’ve previously attempted to read fantasy it often feels forced or awkward to me. Like low budget movies starring actors who deliver clichéd lines. But when this author writes fantasy it appears natural and effortless. There’s nothing hokey about it.
I have to admit that this book was a little light on the romance front, but I enjoyed the story so much that I didn’t mourn the lack at all. The children were well developed and very present characters, so any body who doesn’t like stories with children may want to skip this one. In fact, anytime that the two main characters found themselves alone together I found myself anticipating the return of the dragon kits.
It was nice to read a story where there was absolutely no conflict between the main characters. There was still plenty of conflict, the usual internal “am I good enough for him” worries, Dane trying to get all of the kits to trust him, and the missing dragon children. I’m assuming that the missing kits and eggs will be a continuing storyline, at least into the second book of the series, and I for one can’t wait to see what happens next.
I totally recommend this book to fantasy lovers who love a book filled with adorable dragon babies. And besides, that cover. How could you resist that cover? It reeks of awesome!
