A detective and the head of security at a casino have something in common, don’t they? Perhaps more than one thing.
Detective Mike VanDoren isn’t much of a gambler, but the ongoing embezzlement at Kansas City’s newest casino definitely has his interest. So does handsome Cole McKinney, the head of security at the Time and Tides. Mike dives head first into the case and a relationship with Cole, who can’t believe that any of his trusted employees and friends could be guilty. Mike knows differently, and it’s up to him and his team to figure out who’s behind the elaborate scheme. When a casino employee turns up dead, the case takes a bizarre twist, leaving Mike scrambling to save the people he cares about most.
REVIEW:
VanDoren’s Vice is the seventh book in Jenna Byrnes, Kansas City Heat series. This series not only looks into the personal and working lives of a group of gay police officers and detectives within the Kansas City Police Department, it also delves into the issues gay police officers can face within the department.
Detective Mike VanDoren works in the Property Crimes department with the KCPD. When he gets a call to the newest casino in Kansas City, the Time and Tides he learns they have been robbed of nearly fifty thousand dollars in the last couples of months. It’s while Mike and his partner Lisa Chen are being briefed by the casino owner that he meets Cole McKinney, the head of security at the Time and Tides. It was lust at first sight for both Mike and Cole, the only problem Mike can see for them is the fact that Cole finds it incredibly difficult to believe that any of his friends could possibly be involved in the thefts.
Mike can hardly believe his luck, he’s getting to work with and get to know the gorgeous Cole McKinney. As it turns out Cole feels the same as Mike and in the heady rush of lust and testosterone they fall into a relationship that goes from zero to one hundred practically overnight. As the investigation into the theft continues Mike has to juggle his relationship and how much information he can relay to Cole without jeopardising the entire operation as well as their relationship. This is bought home to Mike when evidence points straight to Cole being not only the thief but a murderer as well. Lucky for Cole, Mike has not a doubt in his mind of Cole’s innocence and then proves it.
I have to say, the Kansas City Heat series is just getting better and better with each instalment! Both the men of the KCPD, the crimes they are investigating and solving are getting more intense with every book. I can’t wait to read the next one!
