Blurb: A Treading the Boards Novella
It’s panto season for the Sarky Players, an amateur dramatics society based in Greenwich, South London. With the traditional Christmas play around the corner, it’s time to get ready for more larger than life performances—on and off stage.
While Craig Rosen is happy with his quiet life playing Warhammer and working in a university lab, a new colleague thinks he needs more excitement and drags Craig along to an audition for the Christmas pantomime, Aladdin.
Corporate lawyer Jason Carter accepted he’s gay a little later in life than most, but now divorced and in his late thirties, he’s ready to embrace who he really is. He can’t believe his luck when he runs into Craig at the audition and the cute younger man agrees to help him navigate his new life. There’s no doubting the attraction between Craig and Jason, but with Craig’s insecurities and Jason still finding his way, they’ll need to make sure they don’t veer off script.

Jason couldn’t believe he’d actually had the balls to do it. He’d never asked out another man before, and come to think of it, Debbie had been the one to ask him. But he’d judged Craig as the kind of person not to react dismissively even if he wasn’t interested. Actually, Craig’s reaction concerned him a bit. Craig seemed surprised that anyone would ask him out, which was pretty daft, as Craig was attractive in an understated kind of way, with fluffy brown hair and gray eyes behind cute wire-framed glasses. Craig wasn’t the ideal man he’d described to Debbie; he was a good deal younger and didn’t strike Jason as having a wealth of experience. But he had to start somewhere, and lunch with a cute younger man wasn’t a hardship.
“Do you live close by?” Jason asked as they walked to the pub.
“Deptford. Not far, really. You?”
“Only about twenty minutes’ walk away. I really liked the area, so when I had to find somewhere new to live, I decided to stay in Greenwich.”
“Why did you need to move? Housemate trouble?”
“If you call an ex-wife a housemate, then I suppose it could fall into that category.”
“Ex-wife?” Craig’s eyes widened, and Jason couldn’t blame him.
“Let’s sit down with a beer, and I can tell you my story without boring you too much.”
The pub wasn’t anything special from the outside, but the choice of beers on tap and the diverse menu meant that where it missed out on curb appeal, it more than made up for it with atmosphere. The bar was already busy with small groups of people and a couple treating themselves to a meal they hadn’t had to cook themselves.
Two pints of lager in hand, Jason joined Craig at the table he’d managed to bag in the corner. Instead of sitting opposite, Jason sat to Craig’s side, hoping it would help the conversation. “Thanks,” Craig said, accepting a pint. “I’ve never been in here before—looks like a nice place.”
“It’s pretty good. We used to often end up in here after rehearsals.”
A silence fell between them, broken by the growl of Craig’s stomach. “Sorry. I should probably order lunch. What do you fancy?”
The setup was too perfect for Jason to ignore. “Would it be too cheesy if I said you?”
