Who wouldn’t want a nice cup of tall, dark, and gorgeous? Shaun Rogers does. He’s working at the front desk of a clothing-optional gay resort when Conrad “Con” Brooks walks in. The sweet, funny, and smart IT guy is there to install a new network and security system, and sparks fly between the two men from the start. Trouble is, Shaun’s hiding his sexuality from his grandmother, the only family he has left, and that makes him reluctant to take the leap with Con.
Then a man claiming to be Shaun’s absent father shows up out of nowhere, throwing Shaun completely off balance. His life spiraling toward chaos, Shaun soon discovers that his “father” is hiding secrets of his own. When things come to a head between them, it’s Con who comes to Shaun’s rescue—but the incident could force Shaun into a decision he’s not sure he’s ready to make.
Review:
I’ll be honest and admit I’m a big Shae Connor fan and have been for a while. The first two books in the Sons series were amazing so I jumped at the chance to review this one.
Shaun is sweet and funny and an all around good man. He’s dedicated to his job and loves what he does. Working for Cory Lassiter and Jimmy Black, who we know from the first two books, he likes his bosses immensely and finds himself envying the relationship between them and the third man in their “thruple” Mike O’Malley. But Shaun is firmly in the closet because he’s terrified of losing his Grandmother’s love.
You can’t help but love Shaun. He’s kind-hearted and loving and I found myself smiling when Conrad Brooks walks into the story and Shaun’s life. With his big personality and even bigger heart, he’s just what Shaun needs to help him find himself.
There’s a lot to love about this story. Shaun’s relationship with his grandmother, the way he gets along with his friends. Con’s dogged determination to let Shaun take things at his own pace, even though he’s pushing him without realizing it.
When Shaun’s “father” comes into the story, it almost feels like an intrusion. You know the man is bringing nothing good, right from the start and it doesn’t take long to be proven right. I could have lived without him in the story actually. Shaun’s struggle with himself was more than enough to keep me interested all the way through. The stuff with his father was a bit predictable, but I guess it did advance the plot at times.
Shae Connor gives all her characters such a unique voice that makes them all such interesting people to know and it’s them that makes her books such an amazing read. My favorite side character in this book is Shaun’s grandmother. The woman has strength and sass and her love for her grandson is a wonderful thing. Her reactions to everything that happens to him are spot on and add little bits of humor that brought happy smiles to my face.
I love the fact that we get little glimpses into the “happily-ever-afters” of the characters in the previous books. It’s like meeting up with old friends and catching up on their lives. It’s the kind of series that I like, where the books are connected through common characters, but the author doesn’t mess with the happy endings they’ve already given us.
The predictability with the “father” storyline is the only bump in the road for me and I happily give this part of the “Sons” series 4 and a half hearts.
