Simon gripped his gun hard. He didn’t like the idea of giving up control of it, but this Nik guy was focused and in possession of some mean-looking weaponry, more than Cain had. He’d heard the bit about bulletproof glass to stop him shooting them, which meant equally that he was safe in here from Nik’s gun. But “safe” and “trapped” weren’t the same thing. “I’ll stay in here,” he said.
Cain shook his head. “You have limited oxygen in there. Either you do what Nik says or we wait until you’re unconscious and take it off you anyway.”
Simon was suddenly very claustrophobic in this small space.
He put the safety on his police-approved Glock, removed the clip, and laid both the ammunition and the gun on the floor.
“On your knees, hands behind your head,” Nik ordered.
Simon did as he was told, kneeling and linking his hands behind his head.
Cain pressed his hand to the wall and quickly the glass panels receded. Nik kicked away the dismantled gun and stood back.
“There’s a BOLO out for him,” Cain said.
Nik seemed unimpressed. “There was a ‘be on the lookout’ for Morgan as well. Doesn’t mean shit. What’s this man’s story?”
Cain crossed his arms over his chest. “Followed me into the parking lot. Ops caught him on the surveillance cameras. He’s covered in blood.”
“Whose blood?” Nik asked.
“His partner’s, or so he said.”
Nik holstered one of his guns and passed the other to Cain. “Hold that.” He turned to Simon. “Stand up. We need to talk.”
Simon unlinked his hands but kept them in front of him as he stood. This Nik guy was still armed, and Cain seemed pretty steady with the other weapon pointed at Simon. And the safety was off.
He decided to start the explanation at source. “Elliot said there would be help here.”
Nik just looked confused. “Elliot who?”
Cain sighed. “I think he means Elliot the new guy.”
“We have a new guy?”
“You haven’t met him yet. Ex-DEA, nice ass, pretty eyes.”
Simon blinked up at Cain. What kind of place was this where a member of staff, or operative, or whatever, was judged on his eyes and his ass? Seriously, he wasn’t following any of this.
“What the fuck, Cain? We have new operatives that aren’t trained correctly? Your new guy told him where to find us when we’re not even up and running properly yet? Shit. You need to tell him he doesn’t go handing out addresses to people without telling us.”
“Tell me about it,” Cain muttered. “And don’t worry, Elliot will get additional support and the training he needs.”
“Probably needs a freaking brain,” Nik muttered.
Simon watched the byplay. The big guy, Nik, was all bluster and action; Cain was sleek and calm, his direct opposite. Yet somehow it was Cain who had been the one to trap him.
Nik patted him down and finally deemed him safe when he checked out his ID. “Officer Grant, does anyone know you’re here?”
“He ditched his cell,” Cain interjected. “No tracking I could see from the scan.”
Simon looked up at the ceiling. They’d scanned him? They had scanners, for real?
Cain handed Simon’s weapon to Nik and wiped his hands on his pants as if he couldn’t bear to touch the thing.
