LENGTH: 228 Pages
BLURB:
Brady Garrett is back on Earth. He’s living with his partner Cam and they’re raising his sister Lucy together. Life is better than some feral reffo from Kopa has any right to hope, and Brady knows it. He’s even grateful for it, most of the time. He loves Cam, even though he’s afraid that he’s not good enough for him, but he’s still having nightmares about the alien Faceless.
Cameron Rushton loved being a pilot once, and he still feels the pull of the starlight. He’s building a life with Brady now, and with Lucy. Life is good, even if it’s not without its complications. Both Brady and Cam are dealing with the endless cycle of interviews, tests, and questions that the military hierarchy hopes will reveal the secrets of the aliens who could very easily destroy humanity. They have each other though, and together they’re making it work.
But from out in the black, Kai-Ren is still watching and everything Brady and Cam think they’ve won, they stand to lose all over again.
REVIEW:
Darker Space is the second book in the Dark Space series. In my opinion, it is not a standalone story, and you must read book one, Dark Space, first. That said, I read both in two days, and loved them both. They are classic science fiction/space opera style books, complete with creepy aliens, telepathy, and a whole lot of angst and anger.
For those of you who saw my review last week of Dark Space, you will be familiar with the characters in that story. If you haven’t seen that review, it is here.
In this current installment, we rejoin Brady Garrett and his partner Cameron Rushton (Cam) back on Earth. After they were returned by the alien Kai-Ren, one of the Faceless, both men went through extensive medical screening and were returned to Earth. Brady is no longer a medic trainee, because no one needs a feral reffo (refugee) training as a medic. There are plenty of doctors, nurses, etc. on Earth. So now Brady is pushing a mop. His internal anger and resentment of course has increased in his new role. I really felt for Brady. As we know, he came from nothing and has been looked down on his whole life from being a reffo. There were times when his anger bordered on being too much, but I think it was integral to the storyline.
Cam has returned to his duties as an officer, but the brass has looked past the rule against fraternization because of the tie the men have from being captured by the Faceless. Their telepathic link is gone, but the military doesn’t quite believe them, so they go through endless testing, week after week.
The best thing about being returned to Earth is that Cam and Brady are now raising Brady’s little sister Lucy. She is only eight, and has been living in the slums of the reffo’s where Brady grew up. They are able to rescue her and give her a better life.
But the Faceless, led by Kai-Ren, are still out there. And Cam and Brady are starting to hear each other’s thoughts again. And why is Lucy showing up in their joint dreams? When the military finds out their “powers” are returning, what will happen next?
I really enjoyed this book. I’ve got to be honest, I liked it so much that I want another book in the series immediately! I’m hoping the author doesn’t wait 3 YEARS again before we get another book in the series!
I highly recommend this book and this series. I loved it! If you’re a fan of science fiction, with kind of an “old-time” sci-fi feel to it, this series is for you.
