Lovebytes guestpost

I thought I would kick off the tour for my new book, A Fortunate Blizzard, with a little telling of the inspiration behind it. I’m sure you’ve all seen movies where, in the opening sequence, the screen flashes a brief and small credit reading, “Based on actual events”? Well, this is one of those movies
Er, stories. For the most part, anyway. Lets call my tale “loosely based on actual events”.

Wednesday, December 20, 2006 was a typical morning along the Colorado Front Range as I, and thousands of residents who called the urban corridor home, made our way into work. Snow had begun to fly, as it is wont to do on a regular basis from October to April. That wasn’t anything new, and as a long-time resident, I thought nothing of it—until it was time to clock-out for the day. So much snow had accumulated that I nearly didn’t make the short drive home. I had to use my car as a battering ram to punch a path into the driveway, and it took four tries to get my door open.

During the 24-36 hours the storm raged, up to three feet of fresh powder blanketed the Front Range. Motorists were stranded at every turn, the National Guard was called in to rescue people from snowbound vehicles, and the Denver International Airport shut down completely for 45 hours.

While I had made it safely home at the end of my workday shift, one of my co-workers wasn’t so lucky. She was one of the hundreds stranded on US-36, the Denver-Boulder Turnpike. Fortunately for her, she wasn’t too far from a hotel off the highway. Not wanting to spend the night in her car and freeze, she trudged through the snow for warmth—where she ended up partying the night away with other stranded commuters in the hotel bar. She was one of those people who made the most of any situation, and it often involved a party. 😉

I hadn’t returned to writing at the time, but a few years later I was remembering that winter and thought to myself, “What if?” What if two men found themselves stranded in that storm, found their way to that hotel
and found a matching heartbeat in each other?

And so began A Fortunate Blizzard, based on an actual event. Loosely.

The Blurb:

There are worse things than being stranded in a blizzard.

Artist Trevor Morrison has always appreciated the little things in life, treating each day as a gift. And with good reason: he’s been on the transplant-recipient list for too long now. When he learns just how numbered his days truly are, he resolves not to take them for granted. But he won’t be unrealistic, either—which means romantic commitments are off the table.

Marcus Roberts seems to have it all. He’s handsome, financially sound, and on the fast track to partnership at a prestigious law firm. In reality, though, his drive for success has meant no time for friends or relationships. Add in the fact that his family discarded him long ago, and he’s facing yet another holiday season alone.

When the biggest snowstorm to hit Colorado in decades leaves Marc and Trevor stranded at the same hotel, a chance encounter and a night of passion leads to more than either of them expected. Finding comfort in each other is a welcome surprise, but time is not on their side. Either they find a way to beat the odds, or they lose each other forever.

  1. I downloaded and read this yesterday. It’s a lovely tale of finding love exactly at the moment you need it.
    Wonderful.

  2. I love it when an author uses their life experiences within their work. This sounds like an interesting tale of love when they least expect it. I would love to read it to see their journey.

  3. Love the sound of this book! Just downloaded it!! Living in the northeast I have experienced a few nasty blizzards myself!

  4. Thanks for sharing the genesis of this book. I enjoy learning about how authors get their ideas. I have read many great reviews about A Fortunate Blizzard and have it on my holiday TBR list.

  5. Being snowed in isn’t all it’s made out to be, lol. Especially if there’s a blackout…

  6. Sounds like a great book. I got snowed it in a snow blizzard some time ago (years, actually) with nine friends. We had to spend two days in an isolated shelter, with no tv, no electricity, no chance at communications… it was fun. We basically played table games and told stories… though by the end of the second day we were starting to get up with each other!

  8. I’m a born and bred Californian. The only snow that I had experience with was during a business trip to Denver. It snowed overnight and I didn’t even think about the snow that had accumulated on the roof of the car! Oh, man when I opened the door it all fell on the driver’s seat and there I am in my business suit trying to clean out the snow and hoping my backside doesn’t get a big wet spot!
