TITLE: Naked Mailman
AUTHOR: Dawn Flemington
PUBLISHER: Loose Id
LENGTH: 110 Pages
BLURB:
Mailman Ken Lane is bored with his life. Nothing exciting ever happens to him. That is, until a nude man attacks him and leaves him bound and naked in the back of his mail truck. After all the excitement, Ken can’t stop thinking about the man, especially when he ends back up in Ken’s life and turns it upside down.
Correctional Officer Devon McLaren is a BDSM Dom non-shifting werewolf whose personal life has gone abruptly to hell. The subject of a non-consensual drug experiment, Devon is trying to get to the FBI with information regarding a drug cartel that would really rather he didn’t. On top of that, he’s consumed with lustful thoughts of the mailman he attacked and longs to do many kinky things to him.
Despite the danger, Devon takes Ken on the run with him, hoping that a trusted friend will help them out (and give them a place to do some of those kinky things). But when said friend proves to be a part of the problem, they’ve got to get out of the jam together, before Devon’s pack is destroyed. But can they, or will their obsession with each other get in the way?
REVIEW:
When Ken’s work mate consults his horoscope and tells him that he needs to be extra careful while out delivering mail that day, he laughs off her warning. As far as he’s concerned his life couldn’t possibly get any more boring, and the chance of anything exciting or dangerous happening is simply a joke. Oh, if only Ken had listened. Over the next week or so, Ken will be attacked, stripped, robbed, kidnapped, fucked, sucked, bound and flogged. He’ll be hunted down and questioned by Doms, werewolves and the FBI. The media will dub him the “Naked Mailman” and most frustratingly, people will keep letting his damn cat out of his apartment while they break in.
Sounds like a lot to fit into a hundred and ten pages? Yeah, it really was. As soon as I read that blurb, I knew I just had to read the story. Any author that can combine a mailman, BDSM, werewolves and drug cartels into one book has earned my respect, but I’ll admit that from the outset I was a little skeptical that it could be pulled off. Well, it kind of was, and it kind of wasn’t. In general I liked what the author did with this story. It was interesting, fast-paced and pretty random. I enjoy when authors can make sense of what seems like a whole lot of random ideas. The part of the story that just didn’t sit right with me was the BDSM aspect. Now I love a good flogging as much as the next reader but I felt that there just wasn’t enough time to develop this facet of the story properly. It was important to the story, it was the reason the two main characters made a connection so quickly, but I think to explore the idea fully, the story needed to be full length rather than a novella.
I think that my main issue with this story was that I didn’t connect with either character, and that might just be a personal thing, other readers may not have that problem. I guess that I just didn’t understand their thinking or reasoning and so had a difficult time accepting their behavior. Actually, that’s stating it rather mildly. Their behavior pissed me off. Devon attacked and injured Ken. He hit him in the head and the shoulder, causing him injury and pain. Yes, he apologizes later, but still, he could have easily robbed the guy without actually hurting him. But it was more Ken’s reactions that I had trouble swallowing. Firstly he gets aroused because Devon ties him up, but he also just beat him up! Then he warns Devon not to steal the mail truck because that’s a federal offence and he can see that Devon really isn’t a bad guy…after Devon just beat him up! When Devon reappears (having broken into Ken’s apartment) Ken happily allows himself to be kidnapped and lets his kidnapper tie him up and use his BDSM toys on him – why wouldn’t you trust your attacker to do that, right!? But worst, and honest to god, I wanted to gag, was when Devon is dressed in the stinky, dirty pants that he bought from a homeless man and he orders Ken to undo them with his teeth. And Ken does it! While thinking about the fact that he cam smell the homeless man on the trousers. Argh. I feel sick just thinking about it again. That might be one of the least sexy things that I’ve ever read!!!
The thing is, I liked this story, it really was just the characters that weren’t to my taste. Unfortunately, the characters are an important part of the book.
I’m definitely not telling you not to read this, I’m sure I’ll be rereading it at some point. If you like the sound of the plot, then go for it, I’m glad that I did. And you never know, you might fall madly in love with these two men. Just because I didn’t, doesn’t mean you won’t.
