TITLE: Tyler Knoll’s Just For Fun: Books 1-4
AUTHOR: A. B. Gayle
PUBLISHER: Wayward Ink Publishing
LENGTH: 180 pages
BLURB:
Tyler Knoll was born one wild, stormy night in April 2013.
Of course, Tyler might tell you he was born twenty years earlier, but should we believe anything he says? That’s for you to decide.
In Tyler’s first adventure—like many a gay man before him—he was SNARED by gay porn, wallowing in tales of bigger, stronger, harder….
Then his fickle mind was seduced and SHREDDED by the prospect of BDSM and slavery.
When a Big Misunderstanding SLASHED at Tyler’s sanity, almost costing him his life, he turned to another genre for his salvation. But even this encounter proved potentially hazardous—not from freezing temperatures, but at the hands of irate fans.
Finally, tired and SCREWED by his all his trials and tribulations, he discovers—like many storybook heroes before him—that sometimes Mr. Right is closer than we think.
REVIEW:
I have never encountered a book quite like Tyler Knoll’s Just For Fun series. It isn’t listed as a comedy but it is quite funny. It was written in a unique way that took some getting used to. The author has the Main Character, Tyler Knoll, conversing with the editor, readers, reviewers and finally a Virtual Reader at different times in the story. I found that it was, at times, hard to keep focus on the story with all the sidebars and distractions.
Ty is a 20-year-old gay man working in the mailroom of his company. His interesting hook is that people seem to be able to constantly read his mind. I kept wondering if he wasn’t realizing he had spoken aloud or if he had no poker face. Tyler journeys through a series of Gareth’s that use him with no regard to who he is. He just seems to be okay with being their toy or plaything with no regard to his personal needs. Gareth’s best friend is his mate from Australia, Dilbert, who he works with and tends to confide in. He is writing his adventures in a series of books. These books tell the story of his journeys as he finds his way from one mad-capped adventure to another. He is sowing his wild oats in a quest to discover who he is and what he wants to become as a gay man. Romance isn’t on his agenda as he searches for his hook-ups. The zany thing is that he seems to find only men named Gareth that want to use him. Each of these adventure stories becomes more reckless as he goes along his journey. I worried what would happen to him along the way but Ty seems to have a life that is similar to a cat with nine lives and always lands back on his feet, no worse for wear.
This unique story telling type was hard to keep straight at times and sometimes seemed to be written a bit amateurishly. I am not sure if that was the intention of the author as it was written in the foreword of each story that the author’s writing level was growing stronger. While the unique writing style was new I’m not sure that it was my cup of tea. I really liked the story development between Tyler and Dilbert but some of the creative additions just didn’t do it for me. I’m going to have to give this a 2.5 stars. Funny at times and a new style but just didn’t catch my desire.
