TITLE: The One That I Want
SERIES: The One That I Want #1
AUTHOR: R.J. Jones
PUBLISHER: Wayward Ink Publishing
LENGTH: 55 Pages
BLURB:
Jason escapes into the magic of a Broadway play every weekend. Musicals always have a happy ending and for a few hours he can believe there’s a happy ending waiting for him, too. When the tall drink of water who works on the top floor of Jason’s building, wants to take him on a date, Jason is surprised. After all, Jason is awkward and skinny, and sees himself as a boring accountant, while Paul is tall, dark, and incredibly hot.
Despite Jason’s reservations, Paul and Jason start dating and attending the shows Jason adores. But if Paul likes musicals as much as Jason, why does he always doze off? Is Paul leading a double life? Does he have a wife tucked away somewhere?
Jason knows Paul is hiding something and when the secrets come out, Jason finds his fantasy comes to life, right there on the stage.
REVIEW:
I’ve wanted to read an R.J. Jones story for months now, but according to the reviews this author is the new bringer-of-angst and I’ll admit, I was more than a little wary. I’m not a huge angst fan, so when I heard about these light and happy tales by Ms. Jones I was eager to finally sample some of her writing. I wasn’t disappointed.
Geeky, unassuming, unlucky in-love Jason doesn’t understand why the ridiculously attractive Paul seems to be interested in him. After all, he’s nothing but a boring accountant who escapes reality by immersing himself in musical theatre. But despite the fact that he doesn’t understand it, he’s hardly going to say no to dating a guy who appears to embody the perfect man. It’s not long however before it becomes obvious that Paul is hiding something, and Jason can only guess at what it could be.
I enjoyed the character of Jason, the way he throws himself into his love of musicals, singing and even dancing along when he gets the chance. I loved that he couldn’t help but fall in love with Paul even though he’d been disappointed and hurt in the past and was naturally hesitant. And honestly, how could anyone resist Paul? The guy is perfect, even if he does fall asleep on most of their dates. The extent that he goes to to land his man was both entertaining and sweet and encourages the reader to cheer him on.
The ending – well now that is something that any Grease fan will swoon over and using the line “a hickey from Kenickie” in an absolutely cheesy way totally deserves some bonus points.
Lastly, I love the covers for this series. I’m a complete cover whore and I appreciate when an author goes with a completely distinctive look.
I can’t wait to read the sequel, which releases in two weeks.
