Writing the One-Off That Must Continue
Buenos Nachos! That’s Finnish for “Howdy!” in Gaelic. Welcome to Day 8 of the Falling Awake blog tour. I’m Kage Alan, which is British for Kage Alan. If I was British.
I come up with a bucket list or wish list each year of things I want to accomplish over the next twelve months. If I’m really, really lucky, I’ll actually scratch a few of them off. There’s a podcast that’s been on the list for a couple of years now and it’s no closer to being done than my second Gaylias novel, which remains over half written. But one item I put on the list is about to happen: a self-published story. I’ve been publishing with publishers for over a decade, only I wanted to learn this side of the business with a one-off story short story, something I could put out there and would be its own entity. There wouldn’t be a prequel, a sequel or a spinoff. Falling Awake was to be that short story.
It turned into a novella. It turned into a novella with an ending I was very, very happy and content with. Then my friend and fellow author J.P. Barnaby read a draft. Her comment at the end? “Uh…NO. You can’t leave readers like that.” Well, yes, yes I can. Because that’s what I did. I gave what I felt was a beautiful ending and something that didn’t require or need anything else to come after it.
I am apparently gravely mistaken.
Can I really blame her or some of my other friends who spoke up after they found out she did it for them? I’m wholeheartedly guilty of railing against stories ripe for continuation that never happen. Honestly, Falling Awake was a self-contained tale that wasn’t supposed to go any further. I’m already working with three series in my writing. There’s the Andy Stevenson books, the Gaylias novels, and then the Butt-thology anthologies. Granted, the anthologies aren’t the same characters from one story to the next, but all the stories do make up a continuing series with the same authors. I’m counting it. I looked forward to a simple one-off with Falling Awake.
Fortunately, I left a major plot thread open at the end of the story. It’ll be this thread I build on when I’m finally able to open my schedule up and begin writing the next part. It will happen. And, if done like I hope it will, it’ll be worth the wait. And so another series is born. I can live with it. I’ve come to know the characters, how they relate to each other, the sacrifices they make, the sacrifices they will make, how events play out through time and lives, and how they handle the threat facing them (and others). There is much to mine here in another story. Will it go beyond the next one? I’m going with no.
That being said, if J.P. Barnaby reads it and I get another “Uh…no!” comment, then I’ll have to give it some serious consideration. Perhaps you’ll tell me what you think, too, if the blurb and excerpt strikes you as something you’d like to read. Come on. What can it hurt? It’ll only cost you a tissue at the end if I’ve done my job.
See you on Day 9!
Tam stared at him for a moment before continuing. “You sound like me. Or maybe I sound like you.” He cocked his head to the side. “And do you believe it’s possible we can sometimes be steered down a path that isn’t good for us?”
No.
“Maybe. Why?” Daniel suspected if he’d outright rejected the idea, it might end the conversation right then and there. The voice in his head would be pleased to no end if that happened, but he was curious what was on Tam’s mind. It could reveal how the man planned to hurt him, if that’s what he was intending to do.
“I used to wonder for many, many years if Huy had ever been reincarnated. I’d wonder where he’d been born, how much he’d retained from what he was taught in his first life, and what he’d accomplished in his second.” Tam sighed, his eyes momentarily glazing over. “I also wondered if I could be reborn close by so that I might meet him. The opportunity to touch a soul I’ve felt connected to, that’s so full of life, so beautiful, so open to possibilities, and wise because of the teachings of older souls… Can you imagine it?”
“No.” Daniel really couldn’t. “The person would stick out like a sore thumb and nobody would tolerate that kind of virtue. They’d try to pervert it and he’d wind up attracting”—he struggled to put into words what he was thinking—“something bad.”
“Bad elements,” Tam clarified. “And you’re right.”
Non-award winning and utterly non-famous LGBT author Kage Alan lives in a suburb of Detroit, MI with his husband, who answers to “His Majesty,” and their fish and shrimp, who answer to “fish” or “shrimp.” He enjoys attending Sci-Fi and horror conventions, adding to his tiny Blu-Ray library, and fibbing about buying Blu-Rays on New Release Tuesday from the US, UK, Germany, and/or Japan. Kage also lives in fear of His Majesty’s Hong Kong Grandmonster, who God apparently doesn’t want to spend time with.

No Spacehunters 🙁
One day. Believe it or not, I know exactly what the next story for that one will be, plus I have three full novels in mind when I finally get a clear schedule.
