BLURB:
Raised among humans, Ori Jones only discovered he was an avian shifter six months ago. Unable to complete a full shift until he reaches his avian maturity, he still can’t be sure of his exact species.
But with species comes rank, and rank is everything to the avians. When a partial shift allows the elders to announce that they believe Ori to be a rather ugly little duckling, he drops straight to the bottom rung of their hierarchy.
Life isn’t easy for Ori until he comes to the attention of a high ranking hawk shifter. Then the only question is, is Ori really a duck—and what will his new master think when the truth eventually comes out?
REVIEW:
I’ve been wanting to read this book for a while now and I’m so glad I did. Not only was it dark, but it was also extremely sexy. Duck! is loosely based on The Ugly Duckling fairy tale. However, it’s far from being a children’s book. The story begins with a glimpse of Ori’s life in the nest. Being a duck shifter means that Ori is close to the bottom of society when it comes to social ranking among the avian shifters. Ori is made to work and is also required to serve the other shifters sexually. However, when a hawk shifter named Raynard adopts him as his servant, Ori discovers there can be joy and pleasure in serving. Raynard is nothing like the shifters in the nest. Raynard treats Ori with respect, cares about him, and treasures his submission. Ori is happy with Raynard as his master, but when Ori’s shifting ceremony comes, everything changes.
I was attached to this book from the beginning. Ori’s submission is so genuine and pure that you can’t help but love him. I was so glad that Raynard rescued him from the abusive situation in the nest. Even though Ori was willing to do anything for him, Raynard never took advantage of him and was never cruel. Raynard teaches Ori that he has no reason to fear him. I love how Ori grows from being timid to being able to stand up for himself. Though this book doesn’t have the traditional type of BDSM with safe words and contracts, the D/s relationship felt very natural and right. Additionally, the sex was extremely hot, and I was very happy with the ending. I recommend this book to anyone who loves dark fantasy, shifters, and BDSM. I’ll definitely be reading more from this author and look forward to reading the next installment in this series.
