REVIEW:
This book was amazing. I love the relationship that grows between Zev, an alpha shifter, and his human mate, Jonah. The story begins at a point when Zev is waiting for Jonah to return to him, and then flashes back to show their lives together from a young age. Zev doesn’t know why he is attracted to Jonah so much, but he comes to realize that the only reason could be that they are true mates. In the world the author creates, shifters live alongside humans but mostly just tolerate their existence. Having a human mate is actually unheard of. Additionally, as the pack alpha, Zev is expected to mate with a female shifter. No one in his family believes or accepts that he wants to be with another male. They also cannot fathom the idea that Zev believes he has a true mate that is male. Throughout the story Zev and Jonah grow closer to the point that it causes them physical and psychological pain. They cannot become mates until they live together and that cannot happen until Jonah finishes his university studies.
The love affair in this book was so intense. I actually felt their pain as they had to endure the long years apart. I was afraid for Jonah and thought he would certainly loose his mind before they could complete their bond, and I was surprised how well he accepts the reality of what he and Zev are. Zev was also very strong to be able to hold out for so long in order to do what was right by his pack and his mate. I think the separation and their longing for one another made the sex scenes intense and extremely hot. Since this is the first in a series, I definitely want to read more. I recommend Wake Me Up Inside to anyone who loves M/M shifter fantasy.
