Lovebytes guestpost

Hi everyone!

People are often comparing book series to TV series, and a question I get a lot about my Demonica/Lords of Deliverance series is this: Which TV shows are most comparable to your series?

It’s a great question, so here’s the answer:

  • Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Buffy is absolutely brilliant, and I wish I could say that I wrote it. But hey, I can still pay homage to it, and I do actually refer to it in Pleasure Unbound. As far as similarities, The Demonica series shares certain elements in that it’s sometimes intentionally campy and the characters are open to allies of different species, gender, sexual orientation, and background. Plus, there’s a sprinkling of humor that helps to keep things from getting too dark, too often.
  • True Blood. Okay, so I just said that humor keeps the Demonica series from getting too dark…but really, when it’s dark, it’s dark. Where Buffy The Vampire Slayer doesn’t go too far over the gore & violence line, True Blood crosses the line and leaves it far, far behind. I have a tendency to do the same, not shying away from the horrors you’d expect in a series based on demons.
  • Gray’s Anatomy. The Demonica series, especially the first 5 books, are based in and around a hospital staffed by demons, vampires, shapeshifters, and were-creatures. Medicine is their passion, and they are all a bit quirky. I could actually see the Gray’s Anatomy staff fitting in pretty well at Underworld General, something I couldn’t envision from the very serious characters in the long-running hospital show, ER.

  1. Supernatural. Really, this is more of a “vibe” comparison than anything else, and I’d say that the Demonica series is less comparable to Supernatural than the related Lords of Deliverance series is. My Lords of Deliverance series features the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, angels, and fallen angels, and it’s got an apocalyptic feel to it as well as a bit of a historical atmosphere. In Supernatural, just like the Demonica and Lords of Deliverance series, angels are not always the good guys, and sometimes the “bad” guys surprise you.

Blurb:

As a Seminus demon, Raze’s life literally depends on having sex with females. The problem is that he doesn’t desire females, and it’s physically impossible for him to be with males. Thankfully, he and his best friend, Fayle, have an arrangement that keeps him alive . . . if lonely. He finds some solace in his work as a medic at Thirst, a vampire club known for its rough clientele. But his carefully structured world turns upside down when he meets a mysterious male who makes him want what he can never have.

Slake is an assassin used to getting what he wants, and what he wants is Raze. But he also wants to earn back the soul he sold when he was a much different demon. All he has to do is capture a runaway succubus named Fayle and hand her over to her family. What he doesn’t count on is being caught himself by a web of lies—and his attraction to Raze.

Raze and Slake must navigate a dangerous world to be together. But as Fayle’s jealousy of their relationship turns deadly, they find themselves embroiled in a battle not only for their love, but their lives and souls.
