A warm welcome to author Rayna Vause joining us today here @Love Bytes
Welcome Rayna 🙂
I’d like to thank everyone at Love Bytes for having me here today to talk a bit about my book, Demon of Mine. I’m sure many of us have had day jobs that were less then ideal. The type of situation where you grinned and bore it until something better came along. I know I had a few of those positions. This is also the case for my main character Zavier. In his case, however, his employer is literally Hell and there are no better offers forthcoming. In the world of Demon of Mine, heaven and hell have gone corporate. Demons wear business suits and attend meetings and meet quotes.
I’ve mentioned before that the movie Office Space was a source of inspiration for this book. I loved the irreverence and snark of the movie. I tried to incorporate a small piece of that into Demon of Mine especially when it came to Zavier’s interaction with his own corporate environment. With that in mind, I thought I’d share a list of some of my favorite workplace themed tv shows and movies.
1.) Working Girl – First off, Harrison Ford is one of the stars so that’s a selling point right there. Then there is Melanie Griffith and Joan Cusack’s totally 80s hair. The OMG did we really look like that hair and clothes is definitely worth checking out. But most of all, it’s a great story of the underdog coming out on top despite all the obstacles she faced.
2.) 9 to 5 – Fun theme song. Features Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton, and Lilly Tomlin. It’s all about three smart women banding together to expose their misogynistic boss for the crooked jerk that he is.
3.) Just Shoot Me – A fun sitcom that had a bunch of familiar faces in it. David Spade, Wendie Malik, George Segal. It’s a comedy about the inner workings of a fashion and style magazine. It was always funny, and sarcastic, and completely irreverent, three qualities I definitely enjoy.
4.) The Office – The crew at Dunder-Mifflin always entertained with a great deal of snark and sarcasm. Anyone else noticing a pattern. LOL!
5.) Down Periscope – I may be stretching it here as this movie with Kelsey Grammar and Rob Schneider is a slapstick military comedy, but being a sailor was their job. It had the gambit of characters from those eager to be there doing the job to those who are only there because they’d be in jail otherwise. The movie was simply good, silly fun.
This is my short list of movies/show all about the workplace. Do you have other movies/books/tv shows of this type that you really enjoy? Again, thank you to everyone here at Love Bytes for having me here. It’s been terrific!
As a Collections Demon, Zavier grants his “clients” one wish in exchange for their souls. His job sucks, but once you make a deal with Corporate South, they own you. The trouble is, Zavier’s not a very good Collections Demon, with his tendencies to spurn authority and find loopholes to help deserving clients out of their contracts. He’s under scrutiny from the head of his department, who would quite literally like to see him burn. He just needs to close a simple deal to get upper management off his back. Instead, he meets Ryan.
Ryan is desperately searching for a way to save his dying sister. He doesn’t believe in magic and demons, but he’s out of options. Zavier’s not what he expects in a demon, and even more unexpected is the strong sense of familiarity—very intimate familiarity.
While trying to free Ryan from his contract, Zavier discovers secrets unscrupulous even by South standards. Exposing them could cost Zavier everything, but it might be Ryan’s only hope.
