Once upon a time I sat in a sunlight-dappled wood, surrounded by tall pines and bracken. All I could hear were sounds of birds and occasional shout from children playing near-by. That moment was beautiful and I wish I could capture it on film. It’s etched on my memory forever.
This photo is not that wood or that moment. I just added it for effect. This is one of my dog walks.
Anyway, back to the story. I’m sitting there, listening to the birds and the kids, and I suddenly had the start of a story. What would happen if one minute the world is normal with the happy shrieks of children, and the next minute the world is silent. What happened to the world? Why is it silent? Where did the kids go? A time-travelling story emerged as I thought about the world going silent.
This was in my fanfiction days, and sadly the story crashed and burned as I didn’t obey the fanfiction rules. However every time I walk through woods I think of sitting in the word listening to the children play. One day I’ll resurrect my story and make it into original fiction because I want that moment down on paper.
My Frankie series will be out in paperback on the 9th September.
