TITLE: The Darkest Midnight in December
SERIES: Soldiers of the Sun #1
AUTHOR: Jana Denardo
PUBLISHER: Dreamspinner Press
LENGTH: 72 Pages
BLURB:
The year is 1930, and something is hunting infants and young couples in Economy Village, PA. When a local priest begins to suspect a demon may be the culprit, the sheriff calls in a team of Soldiers from the Sun. Caleb, Agni, Temple, and Li specialize in demon hunting, but they can’t rule out an old religious sect as the true culprit. Prejudice, distraught parents, and angry townspeople don’t make the team’s job any easier. And if something goes wrong, they’re on their own, because by the time their backup arrives, it will be too late.
REVIEW:
Caleb and Agni are demon investigators who are also lovers. The book starts at the beginning of a case involving missing babies. When Caleb and Agni question the families and the neighbors where the incident took place, they start to find clues to a possible suspect. The demon who is the most likely culprit appears to have a connection to a religious group that hates fornicators. While they pursue the case, Caleb and Agni never waste an opportunity to be together.
Though I liked the mystery aspect of this book, the sex did not seem to fit in with the story. There was only one mention of Caleb and Agni’s relationship prior to the beginning of the investigation, and then all of a sudden after they interviewed the parents of a missing baby they were having sex. I was a bit surprised by this since I hadn’t noticed any signs of affection or even attraction between the two before they were in bed together, so it was hard for me to have any interest in what they were doing. The sex scenes continued throughout the book in the same manner without any apparent building on their relationship. I’m never one to complain about having too much sex in a book, but since I wasn’t able to develop any emotional connection to either character, the sex felt excessive. Despite my disconnect with the characters, I liked the mystery aspect and enjoyed the world the author created.
