Sometimes curves in the road take you right where you belong.
Luther Almond’s life working the Bakken oil field is perfect—short-lived jobs, temporary housing, and easy hookups. That’s one reason he won’t move home when he inherits the lake house. When Erik Heat bends over to fix Luther’s pipes, his tattoos hint he might be up for more than working on the drain. The last thing Luther expects is to want more from this guy than one night.
Every time they’re together, Luther is more grounded and Erik more confident. When the lake house demands attention, Luther asks for Erik’s help. There he imagines a more permanent life, one where he stops running. But he wants Erik by his side. Can he find the courage—and the words—to ask?
REVIEW:
Luther Almond doesn’t like feeling tied down or controlled. He left home the day after he graduated high school and for the last decade has been travelling and working at odd jobs all over the country. His current job is working in the oil fields which brings in a shit ton of money and the only relationship he’s interested in can be found via his favourite hookup app. On the same day he finds out that his grandma has left him her house he meets plumber, Erik Heat. Erik has come out to Luther’s trailer to work on his pipes (in a totally nonsexual way) and as he’s working Luther spots a tattoo that suggests Erik may be up for a little fun. Being out and proud in the oil fields is not an option, and both men happily agree to some regular, secret hookups.
Post Roberts does a great job of fitting this story into only sixty-five pages. At no point did I feel like it needed to be a full-length novel, which is my usual complaint with a book of this length.
There was a huge potential for angst just simmering bellow the story’s surface but the author never chose to go there, for which I was thankful. While there was some conflict involved with the men being at different stages of “ready to come out” it kept within the bounds of a light and angst-free read.
This is the second book that I’ve read by this author and once again I was struck by how well she can write a sex scene. They’ve never been my favourite part of a story and I often find myself skimming through them, but Posy Roberts can make me sit up and take notice. Luther and Erik may find it hard to sort out their more romantic feelings but when it comes to sex, they’ve got their shit figured out.
If you’re looking for a quick, non-angsty read then this is a book you might want to check out. Once again, I’m impressed with what Posy Roberts has produced.
Oh, and if you want to see a stunning collection of plumbers cracks, head over to Goodreads and check out some of the reviews there 😉
